My mum and I really enjoyed our time at Hotel Marroad Karuizawa. The rooms were the most spacious we had ever come across in Japan and we could both open our suitcases comfortably. They were very clean and the beds were comfortable. The service staff were very professional and helpful as well. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet on one of our mornings there. Some of the drawbacks: the hotel is older in terms of style and design, although extremely well-maintained. Our room was on the floor above the lobby and there was no elevator, and there was no elevator or ramp from the hotel driveway to the lobby upstairs. The concierge was very kind to help us with our luggage, however. Overall, strongly recommended!

I visited Karuizawa with 3 adults and 1 child and Hotel Marroad provided a large tatami room where we could all stay together. Tatami was wonderful for our little one, because she could run around freely and safely and the futon beds were not only comfortable but the assured us that our child would be safe sleeping on the floor. Our idea was that we would be outside most of the time so we just needed these basic requirements and we didn't want to spend money on a fancy Hotel like the Prince. So we ended up choosing Marroad. The location of the Hotel is pretty much as good as it gets. It's in just a few minutes away from pretty much everything. If you have rental car it is very easy to get around the city and even close to many of the nature sites like the Shiraito falls (25 min), several museums and the Outlet is only 3 minute away (although beware of the heavy traffic....we waited 1 hour to find a parking space at the Outlet). Anyway, the ambiance of the Hotel is like it was stuck in the early 90's bubble period of Japan's heyday. Everything is clean but it feels like it needs to catch up with the times. Depending on your taste, this is also kind of the charm of the Hotel because it feels like a luxury hotel from the 80's just frozen in time. The bar has a very cool fireplace and attentive staff. The food was delicious and provided enough variety. We only tired the breakfast though. The worst part of this place is that IT DOES NOT HAVE AN ELEVATOR!!! Bring a child, a stroller and several luggages was very cumbersome and surprisingly there was no one in front to help us carry anything, until we checked out. In this day of age that was the most shocking point. We had to climb 2 flights of stairs to reach the front desk and then descend a short but annoying flight of steps to get to our room each time with so much stuff in our hands. For that alone I want to deduct one star on my rating but I have not because the overall experience was good enough to give them the benefit of the doubt. The staff were cordial and helpful when needed. There was no ice machine which we could have used. All in all I would still recommend this hotel to Families that want big comfortable rooms with good service and unbeatable location. I would say they are slightly overpriced because the facilities are a bit outdated but I have no regrets staying here and we have a unforgettable trip.

This hotel is not plush and luxurious but it has large (very large for Japan), nicely decorated, clean, comfortable rooms at good prices. We got a room with twin beds and a sitting area plus an adjoining tatami room. The shower area might be a bit small for people accustomed to Western hotels but we found it fine. Beds are hard, but that's standard in Japan. There was no internet/WIFI in the room but it is available for free in the lobby. Our room rate included breakfast and supper. The restaurant is french and the food was pretty good; Nothing outstanding but enjoyable. The breakfast buffet was of a similar standard although if you're a big eater, you might find the selection a bit small. We didn't have a car so the location of the hotel was a touch inconvenient but it is walkable to the nearest train station where you can also catch buses.

Location of the hotel is fine, but the whole place is a bit aged. The lobby area is huge with a bar (only open until 10:30 PM) and restaurant attached. Rooms are also large but are in desperate need of some upgrading. The hotel has many stairs and no elevator and is inaccessible for wheelchairs. It's an expensive place but so are all hotels in Karuizawa.
