We stayed at a number of Ryokans of various price points throughout our honeymoon trip to Japan and this one was such a pleasant surprise. The decor has a throwback 70s-80s vibe that would suit a Wes Anderson film and the attitude is a nice mixture of traditional ryokan hospitality and modern style. The rooms are spacious for ryokans (which, warning to Americans, might feel smaller than western hotels), and the baths are just lovely. We used both the public and private baths, and enjoyed our time in both. If this hotel wanted to rebrand as a quirky, hip spot for young westerners they could, but you get the sense that they enjoy catering to their Japanese clientele and providing an affordable yet luxurious experience. We spent one night at a $600 a night ryokan and the experience between the two was honestly comparable. Furthermore, Matsumoto is a lovely town, and if you want to add a day trip to your Japanese itinerary do yourself a favor and stay at the beautiful Hotel Tamanoyu.

“Lovely ryokan”

We stayed two nights in a traditional room. It was large with its own bathroom (including shower/bath). It also had two chairs - a nice a break from sitting on the tatami. The onsen on the roof overlooking the town was lovely. Great meals and lovely staff. We caught a taxi from Matsumoto station… more

We stayed two nights in a traditional room. It was large with its own bathroom (including shower/bath). It also had two chairs - a nice a break from sitting on the tatami. The onsen on the roof overlooking the town was lovely. Great meals and lovely staff. We caught a taxi from Matsumoto station, but the number 30 bus goes past the door. Caught the bus too and from town after that.

“Japanese Experience ”

This was a nice hotel to experience onsen, Japanese food, and a Japanese folk singer. We checked in and immediately received tea and a cookie with instructions for the hotel and dinner. The room was small but Ok for the 3 of us. It had the futon style bed that was Ok but s little hard on the back.… more

This was a nice hotel to experience onsen, Japanese food, and a Japanese folk singer. We checked in and immediately received tea and a cookie with instructions for the hotel and dinner. The room was small but Ok for the 3 of us. It had the futon style bed that was Ok but s little hard on the back. We had dinner and it was great! We hung out on the private onsen on the roof and it was nice. We had a folk singer with a great keyboardist entertain us with Japanese folk songs. This was a great place!

My wife and I stayed here with our two young boys for one night recently in February, in a Japanese Style family room, and it was very nice and very comfortable. The staff is so nice and accommodating, the dinner and breakfast at the hotel were very good. Also, the private outdoor onsen bath even with the air temp around 28deg in the evening was amazing, as well as the public baths indoors. There is a convenience store and a couple of good restaurants for lunch within 5min walk. Keep in mind you will need to take a taxi here from Matsumoto Station or to Matsumoto Castle unless you want to walk about an hour. We took a taxi to Matsumoto Castle before leaving and going to the train station and put our bags in coin lockers, and worked out great on a side note! We highly recommend this onsen hotel.
