It's always important to take price into account when reviewing a place. I have read other reviews of Nakamurakan that have criticised the dated decor, the shabby ensuite bathrooms and even the quality of the Hida beef. In isolation all these things are true, but you have to look at overall value. We paid just under $150 Australian per person per night for a room, two meals a day, and the option of booking a private outdoor hot spring bath - we had no problem getting a booking for the private pools when we were there. At the Peninsula Hot Springs near where we live in Australia you will pay over $100 just to get a private pool for half a hour. At Nakamurakan it's included. Yes, the decor is dated, but the rooms are clean and comfortable enough. The ensuite bathrooms are shabby, but it's an onsen, so you're not going to use them anyway. As for the food, maybe the beef isn't the highest quality, but it's still pretty good, and in Australia you'd pay $100 a head for a dinner like the ones we had. The breakfasts were good too. We found the staff very pleasant and helpful, but we speak Japanese, so we have no idea whether the staff speak English. The location is convenient for the bus terminal, and there is a coin laundry round the corner. In conclusion Nakamurakan isn't the latest and greatest ryokan, but it does give you a lot for the mo ey.

Overall pricing is good with onsen included and private toilet. Although we reserved non-smoking room but there is ash tray inside without smell inside the room. :-)

“Old Ryokan, small rooms”

We stayed at Nakamurakan for 1 night with our kids on 3Jan. It is an very old style Japanese onsen Ryokan. Staff were friendly, they spoke very simple English. You can book private onsen when you check in (please tell the check in staff you want to book private onsen). The private onsen doesn't have shower area so I recommend you to take a shower before going into the private onsen room. Please bring your towel in the room to either the public or the private onsen. If you have booked the breakfast and dinner, please ask the check in staff what dinning room you should go to, otherwise you don't know where the table is. The room is small and old. But the view is fantastic. Basically it is a very average Ryokan, you pay what you get. It's the least pleasant Ryokan I have stayed by far. The Hida beef is not very good. The staff in the dining area can't speak English at all. So if you don't know Japanese at all it could be difficult (I can't only speak a little Japanese, so most of the time I didn't understand what the lady said) The Ryokan however, looks very nice. Unfortunately, I will try staying at other Ryokan surrounding Nakamurakan next time as others look very nice as well.

The place is located very close to the bus station and is very convenient. Its a great way to explore the kamikochi area. The staff don't speak much English but they are very friendly and polite.We stayed in a traditional room which was comfortable. However, the hotel is looking a bit tired and dated and needs to be upgraded. The place has a unique collection of stuffed animals in the hallway. The Onsen was a highlight.
