We were checking in late around 11:15pm without notice. The onsen should be closed at 11:30, but it opens it for us until 1am. “OK, some pluses, other minuses, better stay in Unzen”
Stayed here thinking it would be easy access to Unzen, which it was just barely. It's about a USD 10 and 20 minute one way distance with infrequent buses at times. If you have the money, I recommend you just stay in Unzen at one of the premier hotels there, though there are cheaper public options… more
