I didn’t had the chance to stay here, but I had an unexpected experience that I would like to share. I arrived to the resort on 22 August, realised I had booked the wrong dates of stay and the resort was fully booked. As it was getting dark for the day, the very kind front desk staff was very emphatic and helpful, and finally made all the necessary arrangements to put me in another Hoshino property in Beppu. I am so impressed by this wonderful experience, that I immediately made another room reservation for my next year’s vacation in April. I couldn’t recall the name of the kind staff who had helped me, but I hope the hotel could retrace and please send my utmost appreciation to her dedication and service.

“Nature galore paired with great food and onsen”

We visited Kai Aso for the first time during our Kyushu trip for two nights in April 2024. We booked directly via the hotel's website which was very convenient and transparent. We drove by rental car from Bebbu, which was a delightful journey through wonderful nature. Arriving at the hotel, you will notice woods and nature around. The lobby and the adjacent restaurant provide a great open view. Our room/bungalow #13 was a few steps down from the lobby building in a very nice park. The room was large, well equipped and cozy with a private onsen on the terrace. To note, this is all nestled into nature and remember where the bug spray is, which was pointed out to us, as we had to use it. Dinner was a treat on both evenings. We also enjoyed a generous serving of Umeshu on the rocks after dinner in the lobby lounge. Note that there are two dinner services at 17:30 and 19:30. If you prefer to dine later, be sure to reserve this spot in advance (easily done through the homepage), as this more popular spot tends to be sold out quickly. Likewise, we love Japanese breakfast and you can really indulge. The hotel is a great base for exploring and we - as nice as the excursions were - also looked forward to returning, enjoy our private onsen and the excellent hospitality. We were there when the M6.6 earthquake hit the area on 17 April at night - but we felt safe in our bungalow. For expectation management: Kai hotels or Ryokans operate as such and are not full service hotels. So there is no bar or restaurant available outside of breakfast and dinner, yet there is a lobby lounge for tea and small refreshments. At our first visit (Kai Sengokuhara), this surprised us a little bit, but when you know, you adapt accordingly and all is fine. All in all, we had a great time and would happily visit again.

“Lovely place ”

This was a place with around 12 cottages that u enter and u will be wowed by the interior furnishing with a jacuzzi and the onsen outside. At night the fire is lighted to provide you some warmth. However, we have no idea why it will automatically off the heated floor at night. Hence it was a bit cold. When we first enter the resort, the service felt a bit cold incomparison to other ryokans we have been to ! My trip favorite currently is onyado chikunrintei in saga. The lady serving us was so sweet and takes care of my baby ! The food was not as good as I expected. It was good but not excellent. So far, ryokans such as chikunrintei and hoshinoya yufuin provided better food quality. Places nearby are nabegataki falls, kuju park and takachiho gorge! Beautiful sights at nabegataki and takachiho. The flowers in kuju park had not opened yet so probably it is better worth a visit after April. Overall a very good experience, I like the lounge area and the short introduction at bar caldera on the area around mount Aso.
