“Relaxing ryokan in secluded but accessible surroundings.”

Wonderful start to our holidays . Friendly staff , helpful and welcoming . Food excellent . The onsens were a delight , in addition to the public onsens we booked two private ones , of which the open air one was our favourite. Just a relaxing experience amid interesting scenery .

Ryokan Sanga is an absolute gem - an authentic, boutique ryokan in the woods along the river. The grounds are gorgeous, with beautiful details everywhere. I was very grateful that Ryokan Sanga accepts solo travellers - as many ryokan don’t, or else they charge you for two. I had a perfect solo travel experience. Here’s what you should know: Access: Ryokan Sanga is ~2km outside of the town centre of Kurokawa Onsen. I didn’t have a car, and I didn’t regret that at all. Ryokan Sanga sent a driver to pick me up from the bus stop, and since I arrived several hours before check-in, he dropped me off in the little town of Kurokawa Onsen and took my bags to the ryokan. He then picked me up before checkin, and when we arrived, my bags were in my room. The ryokan offers free shuttles to town or to other Onsen if you are doing the Nyuto Tegata (Onsen hopping pass). After checkout, they dropped me off in town, and then picked me up with my suitcase later that day and took me to the bus stop. The service was beyond amazing. Room: I booked a Standard room for one night. It had no Onsen and no shower (just a toilet and sink). There was also a closet and a kitchenette area. Ukata, socks and slippers are provided. You can hear the roar of the river and waterfall, which turned out to be perfect white noise for sleeping. Onsen: When I checked in I booked the private outdoor Onsen for the evening and the following morning (no extra charge). Bookings are for 50mins and there are washing facilities, a sink and hairdryer. The outdoor Onsen is beautiful- it is right beside the river with waterfalls (see pics). Meals: I booked the last meal times which were 7pm for dinner and 8:30am for breakfast - the food was amazing; the dinner was one of my most memorable in my travels to Japan. See sample menu. “Traditional, perfect, ryokan”

Stayed for 3 nights, in Tsuribana room with private onsen. The room is a traditional tatami room, by the fast flowing river. The entrance to the room is a kitchenette with fridge, sink and tea-making facilities, then on the left is the tatami room with cupboards and a safe, and sliding onto a balcony looking straight onto the river, and on the right is the toilet and sink, then beyond is the onsen with the usual shower and the bath itself. You can sit in the bath and gaze out onto the trees with the sounds of the river and the birds - it sounds heavenly, and it is! The road is the other side of the river, but you don't notice it as it's hidden in the trees and a way above the Ryokan. Plus the sounds of the river drown out any traffic noise. Such a beautiful place to stay! This was our third week out of a four week tour of Japan, and a rest period. We stayed in plenty of ryokan, but none quite like this. The gardens, all with streams running through, weave through the buildings of the ryokan so that the whole thing feels absorbed in nature. Not much english was spoken, but just enough to go with our japanese, and the staff were so helpful and friendly, always there when needed. There was a little lounge and firepit by the reception where you could get tea or coffee at any time, and a little fridge where you coud buy the amazing local yogurt. There are lots of walks straight from the Ryokan, plus Mt. Aso and other activities within a short drive. Wed had a hire car but barely used it. So, onto the food: We had breakfast and dinner included. Without exception, every single thing we were served wa beautifully presented, delicious and an adventure!
