On map it seemed to be remote from any subway station, yet the transport was easier than it thought to be. Taking Nankai Bus (Route 23) from Hineno Station to the last stop (Inunakiyama), the Inn is just right in front of you. Our stay was in the Japanese style room with private hotspring. Spacious room and tidy. The private hotspring tube is at the semi-enclosed balcony, and spacious enough for me to stretch and sit, yet still fully submerged in water. Dinner and breakfast were served in traditional “Washoku” style, which were great but the cuisine just might not be to everyone’s taste. Relaxing, quiet and private was perhaps the best conclusion of my stay, and yes, the private hotspring experience was phenomenal. Honestly a bit pricey, but definitely an enjoyable and unforgettable experience.

In early February 2019 during the lunar new year holiday, we decided to get away from home to have some quieter time. We picked Fudouguchikan for its proximity to the Osaka city. It’s a small onsen hotel with great service. I made a request for skipping shell seafood due to allergy but it ended up that they were unable to replace all shell seafood on the menu. They were quite apologetic about it, for which the server sent us two glasses of ume (plum) wine—my favorite—telling us that they were “on the house”. Nice. We were very happy with the traditional Japanese dinner which was served in our room. The next morning, we had Japanese breakfast together with other guests. Again the food was excellent and the server friendly and attentive. Oh did I mention the ume tea they served us when we checked in? It was so tasty that I bought one box at the souvenir shop. The highlight of the stay was our room with a private outdoor bath. We also liked the special experience of tatami bedding. Upon checking out, we boarded the shuttle bus and happily found that the driver was the one who made our bed the night before! Yes, it’s how small this onsen hotel was. Overall, we enjoyed our stay in Fudouguchikan and will certainly be back when we next visit Osaka.

Three strong and pleasant memories marked my stay here: One. Very generous amounts of food. I kept half the shabu shabu from the first night’s dinner to have for lunch on the second day…and still wasn’t able to eat it all. Two. Particularly friendly and willing service. For example, I was asked what I would like for my second night’s dinner from the various items available – the first time I’d had this offer in all the onsens I've stayed at. Usually you get to eat what’s put in front of you…which is all interesting and tasty even if mostly unfamiliar. Still, it was nice to have some choice. And at breakfast the woman serving was probably the most enthusiastic of any I’ve seen for a long time not only in Japan but everywhere I’ve eaten. I mimed how much I’d enjoyed the special juice so she brought me another one…and the following morning I found two glasses of the juice waiting for me at breakfast. Sauteeing my own piece of salmon allowed me to cook it medium rare, just the way I like it: tender and moist. Three. The elevator with an outside view. Not a big thing, but just another chance to enjoy the greenery scenery. There is also a shuttle bus that makes one return trip daily into the nearby towns, as well as a public bus.

We had a combination of rooms with private onsen and those without which meant one room had western style bed and the others futon. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of wearing kimonos, the Washoku style of food service and the karaoke. Although at nine pm we were sent to our rooms! A lovely experience but recommend if you have large appetites you order extra food (meat in our case). And perhaps take snacks as breakfast was interesting... Loved the hot springs.
