"Geihinkan" means "Guest House" and this is part of the Atami Golf Club, a beautiful facility situated high above the center. One doesn't need to be a golfer to stay here since the rooms in the Geihinkan are open to all. And what lovely rooms they are. My wife and I stayed for two nights in a twin-bedded room on the 3rd floor (the entrance is on the 2nd floor) overlooking the ocean. Far bigger than the general hotel rooms in Japan, it was well-appointed with plenty of cupboard space and a spacious bathroom, capped off by a constantly flowing onsen bath. What a delight that was! I wish I had one at home but digging almost 2 km to achieve that isn't really feasible. The staff are extremely courteous, very friendly and most helpful. The hotel in general is kept very clean and tidy. The only negative point I found is the quality of food and the sake (nihonshu) which I wish, and hoped, would have been better. Whilst there were some good dishes, the sashimi, apart from the Hamachi (Yellowtail), were quite disappointing. We had ordered the optional food upgrade menu which included Ise-ebi (Spiny Lobster). This was quite good, although very small. The sake was fairly expensive and the selection not so good, but this is a personal opinion and others may find them to their liking. Breakfast was Japanese style. This was fine but it would have been nice to have had a Western-style option. A few other points: The hotel is about a ten minute taxi ride from the station at a cost of around 1100-1200 yen. The queue for taxis can be quite long at weekends and national holidays, with the mid-size taxi line being far shorter than the small size (not much difference in cost). For the return, the hotel will call a taxi and it takes around ten minutes (maybe slightly less) for it to arrive. It's not advisable to walk since the road is long and winding, and very steep. Dinner and breakfast are taken in the club house building which is a very short walk, outdoors, from the Geihinkan. There are also onsen baths for men and women in the club house building but while the locker rooms are quite large, the baths are small. We found no need to use them in view of the wonderful bath in the room. All-in-all though, we were very happy with our stay and will probably go again.

I wanted to try a hotspring hotel with in room onsen so I booked this place. Although it is very expensive 40,000yen for 2 people with breakfast and dinner but I am aware price for in room onsen is always expensive in Japan. When we arrived at the hotel by taxi, there is already a staff standing there with a guest name checklist which is very welcoming gesture. The check in was very quick amd we were asked to sitdown and have tea first. The staff helped is with the luggage and because the elevator was small. He ran down the stairs and when the elevator arrived on my room floor, the same staff already was there waiting, which was a bit funny and he was fast. The room is very big even it is not very new but it is very clean. There are futons in the storage in the room and I think it can sleep 4 to 5 people easy if needed. The private onsen is small but good size for 2 people and u can adjust temperature by adding cold water.

Vey good view. Facilities are very nice. Large rooms with great view from the bath. The food is very good, fresh sea food from Atami region. The only problem is the service. Staff is not in the "ryokan" standard level I got used to in Japanese traditional lodging. They request the customer to adapt to their needs, when it is supposed to be the opposite (the service provider meets the customer's needs).

But we were very disappointed by dinner and front staff who checked us in. Dinner was medicore at its best although breakfast was delicious! We would come back for view, bath and breakfast next time.
