While my wife and I have stayed in ryokans before in different parts of Japan, the Fufu Atami was definitely one of the best in terms of the lodging, food and service. The price was certainly higher than any ryokan we have stayed in before, but we feel that the value was there to back up the costs. We stayed in three different ryokans in Atami on our last trip and all were excellent. But I would say that the Fufu Atami was a cut above. As with almost every location in Japan, the service is excellent. But at the Fufu Atami, they just seemed to take it to another level. Once on the property, there atmosphere and ambiance is almost zen-like. For the price, we were expecting that the food would be amazing and it did not disappoint. While we enjoy the traditional rooms, there were none available when we tried to get a room so we stayed in a western room, which ended up being fine for us.

This was our first trip to Japan and my first time in a ryokan. I found it very difficult to decide between all the great options I saw online. There were a few places in Hakone that I tried to reserve but they were already booked. They were part of the Ryokan Collection which is how I found Atami Fufu. My first point of contact was a lovely woman at the Ryokan Collection. We traded a lot of emails and she was so helpful and quick to respond. We arrived via train and were greeted by the owner (I think?) and were given a complimentary ride to the property in a taxi. Check-in was prompt and very courteous. I read other reviews that there weren't many English speaking staff members. We were attended to by Thebe, who was great! He showed us to our rooms and instructed us how to wear the kimonos. We arrived on the only rainy day during our 14-day trip and it was a perfect day to spend in a ryokan. We immediately took advantage of our private onsen out on the terrace. It was wonderful! Our room was the smallest room offered but it was beautiful and well-appointed. Our rep at the Ryokan Collection had previously explained that that Fufu does not serve meals in the rooms because some guests had complained about the lingering smell. We ended up booking the teppanyaki dinner on her suggestion and it was delicious. I actually preferred it to in-room dining. While I've stayed in luxury properties before, there was something different about the Fufu; I felt "looked after" in a way that I never have before. It was a different kind of luxury experience and I'm fortunate to have been able to experience it.

Pros - great location, great service, nice room Con - room was too hot, paper napkin/oshibori This is billed as luxury hotel and for the most part it lives up to it. The staff was very professional and helpful. The rooms were large and with nice furniture and toiletries. The hotel even has a special butlers cubicle where if you wanted room service or extra pillows and what nots, they will just place it in a locked cabinet from the outside of your room and you can open the cabinet from inside and retrieve the items, minimizing physical contact or if you just can't be bothered to put on make-up or clothes.. lol... The room comes with a mini fridge with free beverages. And the welcome treat was also delicious, green tea mochi. Our room came with private outside onsen/bathtub. Other rooms even comes with a hammock, I assume those are on the first floor. But the 2nd floor has a better view. The hotel does also come with a public onsen in a separate building. The onsen has a sauna and 2 onsens, one inside and one outside (rotemburo). The mens side and the women's side alternate so that the guest can experience 4 different tubs all together and 2 different sceneries. Right outside the entrance to the onsens there are 2 mini fridges, one filled with drinks and the other filled with sherbert, all free of course. The downside when we were there was the air conditioner controls. We didn't have access/rights to change from heating to cooling. The thing was only set for heating so the room was too hot. Luckily we were on the second floor so I slept with the door to the patio partially open with the extra beddings/paddings that were in the room. The other downside came during meal time. Yes there was the pandemic but, the hotel still provided us with regular table cloth napkins (great). But the oshibori (wet towel) was on of those disposable paper napkin that you would get from JR train. And yes they replaced it once during the meal but it took away from the grandness of the hotel. Other hotel do provide warm, wet oshibori. Some come in plastic that you unwrap yourself and others come unwrapped on a plate. Overall the experience was nice. Would I we try them again? Probably but hopefully the 2 cons are addressed by then.

My husband and I stayed here for one night on July 17, 2020. The members of the staff were very kind and helpful concerning my food allergies when it came to preparing my dishes. Inform them about any allergies that you might have in advance when you make your reservation. The room was very comfortable and quiet. Be aware though that you should request a ground-floor room if you have any problems climbing stairs.
