My family fortunately got the sea-view room from which we could also see the castle (one of the top tourist attractions of the city) on the hill through the window, such a wonderful experience. The room was typically japanese style, Ryokan. Breakfast and dinner served in the room (half board service) literally impressed all of us by the variety of choices and of course the amount. The room service was very impressive, the people who took care of us were all polite and generous. Only one negative was the onzen area (hot spring bath) on the basement floor that a bit too dark, not well-decorated and old. Overall, overwhelming (in a good way) experience.

We choose this hotel after looking on Google maps for one that was close to the ferry docks we were arriving at, and that was not overly expensive. This fit the bill. It is a large hotel, catering mainly to business travellers, and tourists who come for the hot springs. The rooms are traditional Japanese (tatami mats and futons) but they are spacious, clean and comfortable. The dining area provides a great view of the bay, and the gift shop was full of interesting items and local delicacies. The staff were beyond friendly and helpful. There is an onsen right in the hotel and use of it comes with the room. There are also many other hot spring sites within walking distance. Atami is one of the three great hot springs areas of Japan. We were also lucky enough to be there during the plum blossom festival and enjoyed it. The park where the blossoms are displayed is a healthy uphill walk from the hotel or an easy taxi ride. No complaints. Recommended.

The Tamanoyu Hotel is right at the waterfront in a quiet neighborhood so it is a pretty neat place. The uniform for the hotel help is some kind of aloha shirt to put us in the resort mind set. All rooms are Japanese tatami style room. They provide a yukata which you’re allowed to wear throughout the hotel as well as around town. You’ll eat your ordered meals in your room. Next door is a Denny’s for those not opting for 1 or both of the breakfast/dinner offerings of the hotel. The main mineral water onsen in the basement is nice. They have an “onsen” on the 10th (top) floor which turns out to be a plastic hot water pool with I think was plain water. You get a nice view of the city and waterfront from the 10th floor. WI-FI is in lobby area only. Across the hotel is the waterfront. To the left you go to Sun beach and the main part of the city, about a 15 minute walk. To the right is the ropeway, a quick way to get up the hillside to the Atami Castle.

Visited and stayed in this ryokan because of the fireworks in August 2017 - the hotel costs double compared to normal days. If not for the fantastic view from the balcony for the fireworks - this hotel would be a disappointment - very old ryokan and even the onsen is quite old looking. There is a fish tank inside the onsen and I feel sad for the fishes swimming inside- the tank looks as old as the ryokan. Dinner and breakfast was served in the room - the food is not the best compared to the other ryokans I have stayed in. However, this ryokan is convenient in terms of location - there is family mart and plenty of restaurants nearby - Denny's restaurant is just downstairs the hotel on the right hand side. Do visit the Atami rope way and there is apparently a sex museum at the top of the rope way and the castle is nearby too. Generally I find Atami a little too commercialized for my liking given the proximity to Tokyo and it gets a little too crowded. Do check out newer properties like hotel micuras and livemax if you plan to stay in Atami. They are also close to the sun beach.

It had a tatami sleeping room which was a very wonderful Japanese experience with meals , butler style provided in the room. Service staff were gracious and polite. Every night and morning, the breakfast and dinner was laid and cleared for the tatami mattresses. The food servings were plenty and good. Toilets and showers were basic On top floor was the open air jacuzzi for two. It was not crowded and I didn't't mind the privacy of a hot tub bath with the sea breeze. Unfortunately, to enjoy the sea view, one had to stand up in the tub. They could have designed glass walls for a spectacular view. I was there on the windiest day of autumn and at night , the howling winds were loud like i was in a typhoon. My husband and son was unaffected and slept very well! Good value for money.
