Hoshinoya Fuji was a fantastic experience. The views are amazing; we stayed in a “D Cabin” on the lowest level of the hillside, and still had a perfect (and because we were lucky with weather) clear view of Mt. Fuji. As with other Hoshinoya properties, it is high concept; for example the in-room breakfast is delivered in boxes designed to resemble the tackle box of a country fisherman. (And while we were eating it a Japanese raccoon dog sauntered across the meadow in front of us.) You’re issued a backpack with binoculars and the room keychain has a bird call. Best to participate and enjoy the quirks and inefficiencies, like needing to be picked up to get back down to the parking lot/reception area (we never waited more than 5 minutes for the van to come, and our pre-arranged rides were exactly on time). The front desk and cloud forest are up steps — a lot of steps! — but the campfire was fun. While we were there the restaurant was closed for renovation, so we ate in-room, pricey but terrific sukiyaki hotpot. The staff was unfailingly friendly and attentive, including an excellent masseur.

This was an absolute gem and one of the highlights of our trip. Set on a hillside overlooking Lake Kawaguchi with direct views of Mount Fuji, the setting is breathtaking—though it’s worth noting that Fuji is often obscured by clouds. We were lucky enough to have one perfectly clear day, and the view was unforgettable. The check-in process is thorough, with detailed attention to dietary preferences. Guests are then transported by vehicle up to their accommodations, all of which face Mount Fuji. The rooms are modern, clean, and thoughtfully designed, with large glass windows and balconies that maximize the view. The balcony includes a built-in fire feature, which creates a wonderful atmosphere in the evenings. Service here was exceptional—the best we experienced anywhere. Breakfast is served in-room, allowing you to enjoy the scenery in privacy. Dinner is served in a beautiful forest setting, accessed by a scenic walk uphill. There is also a “library” space in the woods for relaxing with coffee. The hotel is within walking distance of the lake and a nearby shopping area (though that area can get busy with tour buses). Bottom line: A truly special, luxury experience with unmatched service and views—highly recommended.

Beautiful setting and well appointed rooms with big windows overlooking the lake and Mt Fuji in the distance (if only the clouds allowed us to see Mt Fuji). Check in was laborious and way too many decisions on meals and times required on the spot and frustrating after a long journey. Few too many… more

Beautiful setting and well appointed rooms with big windows overlooking the lake and Mt Fuji in the distance (if only the clouds allowed us to see Mt Fuji). Check in was laborious and way too many decisions on meals and times required on the spot and frustrating after a long journey. Few too many restrictions and a little far away from attractions. Ideal if looking for nature surrounded setting and not looking to venture out much. Meal options also limited.
