I booked this hotel as it was a lot cheaper than any other and very good location for theatre I was going to with my teenage kids. In the run up to Christmas I didn't get time to check reviews until we were on our way there. I was a bit freaked out at some of them particularly mention of bed bugs. However my experience, for the price of the hotel was completely positive. Check in was easy and the guy very friendly. The room had been recently refurbished and while not to the highest standard was clean and quite practical. We were in room 20 a triple room on the first floor. We all had a bedside light. The bathroom was new, mold free and could only be improved by a shelf for toothbrush etc as the sink was quite small. One thing I wasn't keen on was you had to leave your key at reception when you went out. I felt uncomfortable with this, particularly as there wasn't anyone there when I went to leave my key to go for dinner. The outside door is locked and noone can enter without being buzzed but I would have still preferred to have my key with me when I went out. After reading the reviews I did a thorough check for bed bugs and found no signs. The linen and towel were clean, the mattress new, although a bit cheap and I had a good nights sleep. I was very impressed with the breakfast. The plates and cutlery very clean. There was a table where you could help yourself to tea, coffee, juice and ceral. Big plates of toast came out and there were packets of jam on the table. I only had eggs but you could have vegan sauage and beans as well. You can see into the kitchen and I noted this was very clean. The staff very friendly and helpful. The dinning room was full so the hotel is obviously being well used. I have stayed at many 4 star hotels and paid for breakfast that were not as good as this one and it was free. The wall paper was pealing but the tablecloth new and clean so it seems like the right way of doing things. I don't leave a lot of reviews but I felt some up to date information about this hotel is needed. To me it seems like they are working hard to refurbish and get this into a nice cheap hotel in a prime location. They still have work to do and the entrance and landing carpet hasn't been decorated yet but I am glad they are starting with the bedrooms and not the reception rooms. If you want somewhere in a great location at a great price and you aren't too fussed about decor but you still want it clean, I would recommend Stanley House Hotel.
