The understated elegance of Villa Ganz, nurtured by Yvonne, Leo, Carlos, Rocío, Luis, Ana Carolina, and Marcos, helped make our four days in Guadalajara unforgettable. Our impeccably maintained room—with its comfortable bed and crisp, fine linens—was perfect for recharging before heading a few feet to the dining room for a leisurely breakfast, featuring perhaps the best eggs Benedict we’ve ever tasted. And though that’s saying a lot, Luis’s burrata, asparagus, and short ribs one evening deserve equal praise. Throughout our stay, the front desk team was consistently gracious, responsive, and generous with their local recommendations. If I were to list reasons to return to Guadalajara, Villa Ganz would be right at the top.

My wife and I are just back from a weeklong stay at at Villa Ganz and as we relied heavily on the reviews when booking this I thought it's only fair the we add our voices to the community. A few provisos: we were there in off-season, which might impact our impression. Secondly, I'm a former travel editor at a magazine so can be a bit more particular/picky than the average traveller. For starters, I echo many of the positives in the other reviews. The location is perfect - a few blocks from almost everything in Colonia Americana. And the setting and public spaces are also fantastic - serene and low key and, as the hotel was not very full when we were there, we had it mostly to ourselves, which was a rare treat. And finally the staff are really amazing--Carlos, the night manager; Luis the Chef; Yvonne--were truly kind, welcoming and authentic people. A big highlight for us. As for a few of the things I wish I had read before we stayed: first and foremost would be the rooms. We stayed in #11 on the side that borders the Lebanese restaurant next door. While it's delightfully private and off in the corner of the property, you definitely needed earplugs on Thurs/Fri/Sat and there was a full-blown concert on Friday that made it impossible to sleep before it ended at 11. Not the hotel's fault, but not ideal and might affect someone's decision to book in on a weekend. The room could definitely use an overhaul: the bed and linens are classic, crisp whites, but the rest was tired. The toilet is atrocious (see pics)—looks like its from a public washroom in the 1970s. There's no fridge, no mini-bar, no coffee machine: not deal-breakers by any stretch, but neither ideal in the most expensive hotel in the area. Especially when breakfast isn't included. And the expense was where I was less than satisfied. I knew, of course, what it was going to be before booking in: it was more than 1/3 to 1/2 more expensive than the nearby options of the uber cool Casa Habita and Hotel Demetria, but I liked the more low-key look of Villa Ganz and was willing to pay more to have a more personal experience. But I expect a level of reciprocity from the hotel on such things. Not only was breakfast not included in the rate (as it was at almost all neighouring properties), it was expensive with almost everything at 200 pesos or higher. When I ordered a morning coffee, I was told they only had Americanos. When I ordered a refill, I got charged for two full Americanos when all I wanted was a refill. Not unreasonable, but not very generous either. The end result was that the morning breakfast averaged 675-750 pesos or almost triple what a nice spot in the neighbourhood would cost. This ethos came to a head when we asked for a very late checkout on our last day. Our flight left at 9:30 pm so I asked if anyone was checking into our room and if not, might a 5-6pm checkout be possible. I appreciate that this is a big ask, but they confirmed that no one was checking in and then said I could stay until 6 pm for an additional 3000 pesos - the equivalent to staying an entire night at Casa Habita or Hotel Demetria. I had hoped they'd consider postponing the cleaning of our room until the next day since no one was checking in for a win/win. I said I'd think about, but I did say, "You know I've been here for a full week in low-season; I've eaten here almost daily; I booked directly through the hotel even though the travel sites were cheaper so I confess I would have expected the gracious response to be, "Of course--it's no problem!" But no luck - they did offer 2 pm check-out for free, which is not nothing. But it didn't really help us out so we checked out at noon and just stored our bags. Clearly that last bit left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, but there's a lot to love about this place. GDL can be hectic and coming back to the garden was always a lovely respite and if you are completely price elastic, you'd no doubt have a nice stay here with the wonderful staff who are what truly shines about this place. The decor and vibe of the lobby and terrace were great in our view.
