If you visit Kathmandu and don't stay at this hotel you are cheating yourself out of a treat. The hotel is an old Rana Palace filled with Nepalease history, and palatial elegance. The hotel is situated in a haven just behind a small private road with a beautiful garden and pool. There is a gate guard that secures the road entrance. You get the benefits of the quite garden while staying right on a main street with walkable access the restraunts and stores. The staff is amazing, there are no featured the hotel could offer that would out shine their incredible staff. They are kind and friendly. During my Christmas stay the hotel treated all guests to a Christmas Brunch which was more like a banquet that included plum pudding, curries, mulled wine, decadent desserts , and even a turkey.

We visited Nepal for our son's wedding and stayed at Hotel Shankar for 2 weeks. This was our first visit to Nepal, so we definitely had many questions and needed assistance at times, and the staff went above and beyond, including the front desk, housekeeping, restaurant, bar, pool, laundry, and room service. The staff and level of service we received was outstanding. The rooms were as shown on pictures; very clean and inviting. We did check out of the hotel to visit another city for a couple of nights, and they were able to securely store our luggage while we were away. We had to extend our stay due to flight cancellations, and the front desk was more than helpful to find us a room that met our needs with our daughter joining us for the last few nights. We do not have any complaints, just gratitude for a wonderful stay at a beautiful hotel with staff that takes pride in making guests feel welcome. We will stay here again on our next visit.

A Palace converted to a Hotel. Yes it’s an original Palace built in 1894 by General Jit Shumsher Rana, which later converted to a Hotel in 1964 by Ram Shanker Shrestha and where Queen Aishwarya born. Still very well maintained with beautiful timeless architecture, paintings and Jhumars. Reception area has a real feel of a Palace with huge pillars all around. The rooms are cozy, but one feels the vibes of old world charm with carving on the walls and pure wooden furniture. It has a restaurant and a Bar, but breakfast hall is really huge and attractive. The menu offers good variety of food, including local cuisine and the taste was decent. Bar is comparatively small but have good serving staff. Breakfast was lavish, serving different varieties on all days and service was also prompt. The property had a Durbar Hall, Courtyard and a Lawn Area with beautifully maintained Swimming Pool. When you walk pass the corridors, you will feel the nostalgia of the vastness of this Palace. All the staffs are really courteous and will greet you, every time you come across. The location of this property is perfect. Situated in a posh area, away from the noise but near to some important places, like, 10 minutes walk to Thamel Area, Durbar Mall and Garden of Dreams. Few things which I didn’t like was - it’s restaurant doesn’t have a Window and it’s a bit cramped, situated at a basement of the property. - it doesn’t have any fitness centre or a gym. - it doesn’t have any games room for kids. Overall it was a very satisfying stay and will highly recommend.
