Copthorne Hotel Oriental Bay Wellington

“WELL LOCATED, WELL APPOINTED ROOM”

We only stayed the one night. We choose the Copthorne to be well located for family events during the weekend. The hotel certainly delivered - great parking, a few minutes walk to Courtney Place, well-appointed room, good bathroom, friendly and accommodating reception staff. Would definately return.

“Great stay”

A great stay, despite the temperamental lift. And a special shout out to Jesse (sp?) who was on reception in the early hours of the morning but who still went out of his way to deal to a couple of things for me. Appreciated it!

“Comfortable stay”

This was easy to find and a pleasant walk from the railway station and the Bluebridge Ferry terminal at Wellington harbour. It took about 35 minutes along the waterfront. Good pedestrian access. This was easy to find and a pleasant walk from the railway station and the Bluebridge Ferry terminal at Wellington harbour. It took about 35 minutes along the waterfront. Good pedestrian access. The renovation work is neatly camouflaged and the reception team is helpful and friendly. There are light bar snacks and drinks available once the main restaurant has closed. The room was comfortable, clean and warm with a good bathroom and hot water. Daily housekeeping service is available. Good selection of teas and coffee. Recommend.

I have stayed at this hotel dozens of times for work & leisure, both during its time as a Copthorne, and in its previous guise as a Travel Lodge. My last lengthy stay for work was in November 2019 and so I wanted to revisit Wellington and experience what I had enjoyed so much in the company of my wife this time. Gosh! Has this hotel gone Down Hill, or what?? Where do I start? Firstly I appreciated being given a harbour-view room as booked despite the front tower of the hotel being closed for renovation (earthquake strengthening). I had booked a room with one large bed, the room we got had two beds, so a bit of an inconvenience, but under the circumstances - reduced capacity we still got a balcony. That's the good part. Oh, and the location is excellent too! In fact its the best thing about this hotel - it looks back on the pretty city skyline, which looks magnificent all day & night, and it is so close to the harbour, Oriental Bay, and Courtenay Place. This hotel is tired looking - if you don't believe me, take a look at the dreadful restaurant decor & seating - it was dirty too. The reception desks, including restaurant had peeling paint. The guy serving food & looking after people - a short older man - took our plates away while we were still eating and didn't say excuse me or apologise! The cooked breakfast was a grease pit - and the food smell & lack of ventilation made us eat out for the rest of our stay. Don't take the lift, take the stairs and on each floor you will see a taky flower arrangement - toi toi's? in a vase on a dilapidated table - more pealing paint, and stained carpet. Everything was just so old & tired looking, or dirty. Even the staff looked tired, and it was only November! Will I be back? The place needs a revamp & money spent. If Copthorne can spend $$ and tart up their Greymouth Hotel, then they sure can do the same on this once grand location. For now I'll look around for other options.
