We had a couple of nights booked near the beginning of our New Zealand holiday in 2026. We weren't travelling light and had some large suitcases to live out of. Initially we had been booked into a very nice, well equipped but small room on the ground floor. We spoke to the owner about this and he immediately re-allocated us to a larger room. The place itself is quite charming. It is on the edge of Mosgiel, which is a low rise and very spread out town. We had hoped to walk to the "downtown" area, such as it was but rapidly came to realise that the only practical way of getting there was by car. Hunters Moon is set amongst fields on a slightly raised position and is accessed by means of a gravel road. There is plenty of parking on site but beware of the couple of parking slots that are situated beneath the trees unless you are happy for your car to be decorated with guamo! The accommodation itself was just right with well equipped rooms with fridge, microwave and tea and coffee facilities. The main house has a large kitchen/dining room as well as a guest kitchen for those who want to cook for themselves. Another review has complained of the disarray in the guest kitchen but we saw no evidence of this whatsoever. One thing that would have been nice would have been access to a washing machine in common with other NZ properties. There was however a good laundrette in town. There is a newly opened walking trail near to Hunters Moon that follows the route of an old railway track and goes through a 1km long tunnel. We enjoyed an evening stroll along it and in due course, it will be opened all the way through to Dunedin. On both evenings, we bought take aways and John was more than happy for us to eat in the dining area using his plates and cutlery. He joined us for a chat and we greatly enjoyed his company. On our second night , we had a Chinese, which we over ordered. John helped us with the surplus and I hope that he enjoyed the left overs after we had departed. A continental breakfast was included and was served in the dining room which enjoyed superb views over the surrounding countryside. There was an option to add more cooked breakfast items at added cost but we were happy with juice, cereal and toast. Just like home! A charming tradition was that they feed the sheep and alpacas in the mornings at 09:00. The animals are pretty smart and don't bother coming by if they don't see any guests in the dining room. It was rather lovely giving food to the farm animals which are quite tame. John explained how they feed. All in all, a very pleasant experience and would I stay there again? Absolutely yes.

We had wonderful experiences at this place. Stuff were warm and welcoming.The room was spotless,clean with very comfortable beds.The location is perfect-quiet,lovely views around, you can seat outside and meet people and just enjoy and relax. It’s offers outstanding value for money, and would happily stay here again. It’s also great location if you would like to catch up with few friends and stay altogether and have private party.Highly recommended for anyone who looking for comp, quality service and stress-free stay.

“Nice location and host”

Nice location and very friendly host. The breakfast was ok, but limited to grains and milk/yogurt. Cooked eggs and meat would have enhanced the experience. I recommend this lodge as a good place to stay.

The location was easy to find however parking was a bit tight since our host had guests over for a birthday celebration, and the disability park was taken by one such guest ( which we required) Atmosphere was very lacking. A key to our room and a note was found at the entrance; a quick ‘hello’ by the host from the kitchen, who did not greet us or show us around etc. He was too busy entertaining his private guests, who became a bit noisey later on. Room was an upgrade and the bed very comfortable. A few issues we had with the room were: tv too small for a big lounge so we had to pull the couch closer to it; we had to ask for wine glasses as the ones provided were very small; there was a microwave however no cutlery or plates; the couches were hard and needed cushions…we used bed pillows; the ensuite is tiny and there was no room to put our toiletries bags; a loud generator? was running all night long and made sleeping difficult; people upstairs were very loud and could be easily heard talking, walking about etc Breakfast: Not a lot of options available and a cooked breakfast was a cost. There was no atmosphere in the dining room, no radio playing, just dead silence, then our host began talking loudly and non stop with another guest about trucks right through our entire breakfast, it was awful and we felt like intruders rather than paying guests. The rooms are clean and tidy, however other areas eg lawns were in need of attention. We don’t feel this was the place for us to return to.
