This was a wonderful hotel, very comfortable, delicious food and a great art exhibit of outsider art. Here is what was so very special about this hotel: the front desk staff. I saw 2 pieces in the art show that I loved, so asked if they were for sale. The front desk man (I could kick myself for not remembering his name), said no, but they did sell posters. I said I have no way to travel with it. He said ship it. I bought two posters, paid for shipping and that lovely man did all the rest. When I got home, I wondered if I would ever get them, but not too long and there they were on my doorstep! He really went above and beyond to make me (and the friend for whom I'd bought the second poster) happy! What service -- the hotel should find out who it was and give him a commendation or, better, a raise. Even if you don't want to buy and ship a poster, go to this hotel; it is really, really nice physically, foodly and staffly. And it right next to the Viking village reenactment.

Stiklestad Hotell is a functional business hotel on historically important ground, but it is not somewhere I would choose for a private break or special occasion. My one-night work stay was perfectly manageable, though overall it felt like a 3/5 experience. The setting is quiet, and there is something genuinely interesting about staying at Stiklestad, given the site’s place in Norwegian history. That gives the hotel a slightly unusual character: it feels more like a cultural building than a conventional hotel. For some guests that will add interest; for others, it may reinforce the sense that this is a practical stopover rather than a warm, contemporary place to stay. The hotel is also quite remote by airport standards, with more than an hour’s drive from Trondheim Airport Værnes, so this is not the kind of hotel I would pick for convenience unless I specifically needed to be in the area. On the plus side, there is a large free car park and the surroundings are calm. My standard room, number 227, was fairly large, but it felt dated, something that is clear from my attached photos. As the pictures also show, the room had only a small window, which made it feel quite dark, and the lighting did little to improve matters: one large ceiling light cast a cold, uninviting white glow. The bathroom was spacious and pleasantly warm underfoot thanks to the heated floor, which I appreciated, and housekeeping was good throughout. I had two single beds, both quite narrow for anyone used to a double bed, and the view was nothing memorable. Service was efficient rather than memorable. Check-in and check-out were quick, and the reception staff were perfectly fine, but there was not much of the extra attentiveness that separates the best hotels from the merely adequate. Breakfast was similar: decent choice on paper, but the quality was uneven, with even the sliced cheese looking dry. What could be improved - The bedrooms would benefit from refurbishment and warmer, more pleasant lighting. - Rooms with more natural light would feel far more welcoming. - Breakfast quality needs to match the selection more consistently. Final verdict: I would consider staying here again for a short work trip in the area, but I would not recommend it for a leisure stay or a special trip. If you go - Bring a car: the hotel is some distance from Trondheim Airport, but parking is easy and free. - If possible, ask for one of the brighter rooms. - Go in expecting a practical business stay, not a cosy hotel experience.
