A few things to keep in mind when booking this place 1. It’s in a jungle, so expect some degree of bugs. Our first day we were greeted with a fairly large spider above our bed, but the staff professionally and kindly took care of it (it was too high for us to reach and take care on our own). 2. It’s an oasis from the chaos of Aguas callientes. I loved returning to our corner of the town, and enjoying the peace and quiet. I think that alone justifies the price of the hotel. 3. I don’t necessarily think it is outright a 5 star hotel. The service and the surrounding area make it seem so, but the rooms themselves are not over the top. I would also like to give a high shout out to Nicolas for being so kind and giving us great recommendations during our stay. He went above and beyond ensuring we were taken care of. I would stay here again.

“Comfortable hotel, beautiful gardens, excellent location!”

We had an overnight stay here to visit Machu Picchu. We arrived by train from Ollantaytambo. Our room was not ready so we left our bags and went for a walk through their extensive grounds/gardens which was lovely. We saw lots of hummingbirds while sitting by the pool area. We met our guide for our first Circuit (2B) of Machu Picchu. We had booked a Superior room (including dinner and breakfast box as we had a 6am entry to MP the next morning). Our room was comfortable and clean. Dinner at the hotel restaurant (separate from the hotel and you have to walk across the train line which is no real trouble) was good. They held our bags following checkout and until our train to Cusco the next afternoon. The hotel is minutes walk to the train station and bus to the Machu Picchu site. Plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops around it. We completed Circuits 2B, 1B and 3B of Machu Picchu - all very worthwhile for this once in a lifetime visit.

“Outdated and too expensive.”

Rather outdated with a very old-fashioned atmosphere. Very outdated restaurant. Extremely touristic. Look for alternatives for this budget.

We stayed one night at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel. This stay was part of an extensive private (two couples) tour of Peru, which was arranged by a luxury touring company. We had really wanted to stay overnight at Sanctuary, as we were planning on visiting Machu Picchu on an afternoon and also the following morning. However, our tour company told us that the Sanctuary rooms were small and overpriced, and (more concerning) because of some unsettled lease conflicts with the government of Peru, booking rooms at Sanctuary was not advised and we should book at Inkaterra instead. We stayed in junior suites. We dropped off our luggage and had an excellent lunch at the restaurant before heading up to Machu Picchu with our guide. We came back around 6:00 pm or so to officially check in, then had dinner at the restaurant, went to bed, were up very early to grab a minimal breakfast, checked out, and went back up to Machu Picchu. The hotel kept our luggage while we came back for lunch at the restaurant and hang out for a bit, and they transported our bags to the train station for our mid-afternoon train back to Cusco. So, we were at the resort full time for a little over 16 hours total. There are some really nice things about Inkaterra. Depending on what you ordered, the lunches and dinner could be delicious, and our cocktails and wine were mostly good. Our room was good-sized, the bed was huge, there was pretty good wifi in spots around the resort, and the gardens were beautiful. Staff were friendly. Our luggage was picked up and brought back to the station by hotel staff with no problem whatsoever. We felt that there were too many quirky and annoying things about the Inkaterra, though. Our room need better cleaning and maintenance. Everything was very damp-smelling (yes, we knew we’re in the high jungle, but it smelled beyond that), the floor needed a good cleaning, the bathroom’s shower had drainage issues, the hot water was spotty, and the toiletries were meh: no lotion in our room and the bar soap was weirdly non-sudsing. We could charge our phones in the room, but it was super slow. Staff seemed quite disorganized throughout our stay. We were never offered the complimentary welcome tea and pisco sour that they tout on their website. We waited 45 minutes past our dinner reservation to be seated, while most of the restaurant sat empty. (We were gratified we didn’t have to wait for the okay breakfast, but then again we showed up at 6:00 a.m.) Not that any of the staff needed to speak English perfectly, but there were definitely varying degrees of English proficiency which made communication difficult at times. As we noted, the gardens were beautiful, but the small swimming pool and the whirlpools’ water seemed a bit brackish, and overall the vibe leans toward the overly rustic vs a well-maintained resort. Perhaps if we had booked a longer stay and enjoyed the spa and the gardens and had had a room with a private plunge pool, our opinion would be higher (but we kinda doubt it.) Not particularly recommended, and if we were to go back to the area we’d try to find a newer property, or even take our chances with the Peruvian government and book the Sanctuary.
