It is certain the physical structure of Gran Bolivar has seen better days, but the cleanliness, friendly & attentive staff and location make up for it - not to mention the very reasonable price. If you don't speak Spanish & haven't traveled in South America before, you will likely be disappointed or frustrated with your stay here. But, if you are looking for a centrally located, simple, inexpensive, clean & well-staffed hotel - with a gym & free wifi, the Gran Bolivar is an excellent value. We stayed here for 4 nights in a spacious corner suite with a terrace (overlooking mostly the corrugated metal rooftops, roof top water tanks & laundry lines - but also a gorgeous view of the sacred mountain & star-studded sky). There were several crickets that tried to get in through the terrace door, but we soon figured out that if we dimmed the lights at night they were less likely to find their way in. Small inconveniences in the grandeur of life. The bed was spacious, comfortable & all sheets, blankets & towels were spotless. The staff (desk, bellhop, cleaning) were all friendly (though somewhat reserved, typical for Peru - which you will learn as you spend more time in this beautiful & varied country) & helpful with setting up tours & giving us tips for getting around & eating out. We took advantage of the small gym in the basement, were delighted to have free wifi (though if you need a lot of bandwidth you may be disappointed from time to time), and the breakfast each morning was a plentiful buffet, delicious & staffed by a friendly staff. Peruvians work 12-14 hour days (sometimes more) - the staff that prepares breakfast is often starting around 4:00 or 5:00 am after working late into the evening the previous day. ¡Muchísimas gracias a todos del Gran Bolivar por hacer nuestra experiencia en Trujillo tan acogedor! “Cheap and adequate”

As other reviews have stated, this hotel has a magnificent entrance and reception suite, but obviously rooms vary. Ours was a bit shabby but adequate, and very quiet. Fridge with stocked minibar, effective aircon, good strong shower. Bed was a bit basic. The breakfast was bizarre. For example, breakfast cereal, but no milk to pour on it (only strawberry yoghurt). It was a buffet, but what was there seemed quite random. However, the room was very cheap ( £35 inclusive of breakfast for two), and not too far from the centre. So all in all, a decent compromise for someone on a budget.

“Fair value for the price”

Room was bit old, hot water was not hot enough, toilet doesn't have enough water pressure to flush. Room was quiet. Breakfast was good. Room service was very slow, food quality not very good. Front staff has tried to help me but language problem was too great.
