Loved this place. The stately old home is conveniently located just up the hill from the university and an easy (hilly) walk to the wonderful maze that is the medieval old town. (You can't go ANYWHERE in Coimbra without going up a hill or three.) The Luggage is billed as a hostel, but it is more accurately described as an old style bed & breakfast, and its two-star rating belies the charm of the lodging. Our room, billed as a suite, was quite large, full of wonderful natural light, amazing views, and comfortably furnished. The bathroom was huge, recently renovated, and well appointed. Breakfast included a nice assortment of cold and hot options--even baked beans for British guests. Staff were great: very helpful, friendly, and attentive to our needs. Other guests seemed to be primarily families and couples, and were respectful of one another; the only noise we heard in the halls was a fretful baby. I do grant that The Luggage isn't for everyone. The house is beautiful, but it's clearly on its way back from some rough times. The views from the terraces are wonderful, but the spaces are used mainly for smoking; I'd've loved some comfy seating to catch the evening breeze. Some rooms lack private baths so pay attention when you book. If you are all about luxury and extras, you should probably look elsewhere. But if you appreciate old world charm, comfortable accommodations, and reasonable prices, The Luggage a wonderful option.

“In a quiet street”

Arrived lunchtime and were able to drop off suitcases at reception area until 3pm check-in time. Outside of building needs maintenance but our suite was big and airy. Spotlessly clean inside and breakfast was sufficient. Very near the centre - easy walk down to centre but a killer to walk back up… more

Arrived lunchtime and were able to drop off suitcases at reception area until 3pm check-in time. Outside of building needs maintenance but our suite was big and airy. Spotlessly clean inside and breakfast was sufficient. Very near the centre - easy walk down to centre but a killer to walk back up the hill! On street parking (metered). There is free parking opposite street if you’re lucky enough to get a space.

“You can probably do better in Coimbra”

First I'd note that rates seem to be going up by quite a bit - the rack rate on the poster in their hotel says 2021/22 year is 80 EUR for family room without breakfast - it was 95 for my booking (with breakfast). First I'd note that rates seem to be going up by quite a bit - the rack rate on the poster in their hotel says 2021/22 year is 80 EUR for family room without breakfast - it was 95 for my booking (with breakfast). Overall it's not worth the price you're paying. Location is mediocre for Coimbra, as you're on a separate hill from the university so it's uphill both ways. Staff are not very present and seem to be hiding when they are. Breakfast is on the lower end of the places I've stayed in Portugal - not much is appealing. The family room is also devoid of natural light and has noise from birds and other animals in/on the roof. The room itself was clean and the bed very comfortable.
