We really enjoyed spending a few lazy hours in the sun up at the rooftop pool. We can also recommend staying in for dinner since the food and service was superb.

The location of this hotel is far from ideal. Although it's an easy 15-minute downhill walk into the centre, it's too far to walk uphill on the way back, which means taking either the metro or Uber/Bolt, but the metro has an onerously archaic payment system. There are plenty of other hotels in much more convenient locations - unless you want an outdoor swimming pool, which is where this hotel has an enormous advantage over any other. The pool on the 5th floor has amazing west-facing views, including of the Atlantic. Beware that, if you choose so-called "city view" (even-numbered) rooms, which in fact have no view of the city but an unimpressive view of the street, you will suffer a degree of noise from the street. There is a loose drain cover in the road, which makes a loud metallic double impact sound every time a vehicle drives downhill over it. We were given room 232, which had a defective seal on one side of the window, allowing this loud noise to penetrate the room throughout the night. When I complained about the defective window seal, the front desk wanted to charge us €30 extra to move to a "garden view" room, despite my Marriott gold status. A defect should not be used as an opportunity to charge more money, and the poor attitude by front desk staff made us feel like an inconvenience rather than valued guests; this is the key driver for my low rating of the hotel. After a shift change in the evening and I played several audio recordings of the noise in the room, the front desk staff were more accommodating and moved us without charge. My girlfriend left something in the shower in the previous room. We notified the front desk before housekeeping had a chance to clean the previous room, and subsequently asked twice more, but it was never recovered. Housekeeping must have thrown it away. Although it wasn't a high value item, its loss was both inconvenient and avoidable. The air conditioning controls in the rooms are very effective with intuitive temperature and fan speed controls, and the fan on all speeds is much quieter than most other hotels. There are only 4 usable power sockets in the room - one each side of the bed, one at the desk and one in the bathroom. There are also 2 more inaccessible power sockets for the kettle etc. This low number of usable power sockets as well as no USB-C sockets is surprising for such a modern hotel. The internet speed seems to be capped at 30Mbps upstream and downstream, even on the premium internet given to Marriott gold members. I expect around 10 times this speed in a modern new hotel in a modern country like Portugal. The RJ45 ethernet socket at the desk doesn't work. The television has a wide range of channels, including BBC World, although it didn't seem to be HD quality. Flannels are supplied in the bathrooms, but no bars of soap. Service at breakfast is excellent. The large number of friendly staff do their best to meet any specific requests. The choice and quality of food was also impressive, and we found everything we needed. Despite the hotel being comparatively empty on our day of departure with plenty of online availability for bookings on the following night, it took a lot of persuasion to get 2pm late check-out as a Marriott gold member. Another guest at the next desk was offered 4pm late check-out without any difficulty.
