“A stay of extremes”

We booked 4 nights here based on price (which was excellent for Sighisoara) and convenience to the train (the hotel is located across the street from the station) and location - only 15 min walk to the old town (albeit up a lot of stairs). Having said all that, 1 or at the most 2 nights would have been more than enough to see this small town. The best way to review this hotel is to present the pros and cons. Pros: Staff were friendly providing good service Room was large, (once we were moved to room 6) clean, good heating and hot water, Restaurant provided excellent breakfast and main meals at great value - for instance great burgers and chips for only 14 lei - and we haven't had a burger in about a year - so did that 4 days running. Cons: We were originally given room three. The room is quite small as it is under the eaves - so half of it is under the slope of the ceiling. The TV unit and only shelf and wardrobe are in the 'danger zone' and we knocked our heads on the ceiling 4 times in half an hour - and we're not tall. This was remedied by giving us a bigger room (Room 6). As we were staying for 4 nights not 1, we would have thought we would have been given the bigger room straight away - but it was booked through booking.com which seems to justify the smallest room possible in some innkeepers eyes. Just sayin' is all. The bed was a very small double, (just 140cm wide). In their defence it was as advertised (we were given a range of 130-150 cm on booking.com). However, we didn't pay much attention to this on booking as most beds these days are at least queen sized - this is probably one of the reasons the room is so cheap. We are not massive people - but still a double is very poky - before you consider staying here, go and measure 140 cm across your bed at home and then consider whether it's going to be enough room for 2 adults to sleep comfortably. Given the smallness of the bed, we asked if they could spare an "extra bed" - they have fold in half beds there for extra guests and we saw at least 3 available in the store room. Don't know if it would have been comfortable (but it would have given one of us extra space to be uncomfortable in). We were immediately told there would be an extra charge - we did say that we weren't trying to sneak an extra person in, it was just for a bit of extra space given the smallness of the double bed. Nope. Asked the boss. Nope - there would be a charge of 120 lei for the 4 nights. It's not that they were booked, it's not that they were busy - they were just, no way, concerned with the comfort of their guests. Thus we got a taste of the infamous Romanian sternness by being told flat out NO! This lack of empathy or friendly attitude was not a good start to our stay. As it turns out the teeny-tiny double bed was also rock hard. Nice linens for sure... but pointless if you lie there awake all night aching and are crippled the next day. We ended up piling our coats and down jackets onto the bed for extra cushioning. They also only provide 1 pillow each and 1 extra small cushion shaped thing. Not really another pillow. Didn't dare ask for another actual pillow each in case the calculator came out to figure the cost for the greedy westerners demanding extra things again. In conclusion: A good stay at a establishment is basically whether you had a good nights sleep. We didn't - not once - so based on that alone we can only give an overall average (doesn't matter how friendly the staff are or how good the burgers are). If you are going to Sighisoara - just pay the euro and get a place up in the citadel for one night and be done with it (or only stay here one night and be prepared for discomfort).
