“Fawlty Towers”

Architecturally this hotel is simply gorgeous, as are the public areas. However. I was allocated a rooftop attic room and because the hotel was full, I could not be moved. Architecturally this hotel is simply gorgeous, as are the public areas. However. I was allocated a rooftop attic room and because the hotel was full, I could not be moved. The window was high and the only view was the sky. I tried to ring reception but the phone didn’t work (and was replaced). I put my valuables in the safe but it wouldn’t lock (the battery was replaced). Because I was in and out so frequently dealing with reception, the keycard was in and out for short periods and when I returned after dinner, the room was hot and stuffy and the aircon blew only room temp all night. Opening that high window was not an option as street traffic very noisy. The couple across from me’s aircon didn’t work at all - and they faced west into hot afternoon sun. The hotel supplied them with a fan. On the plus side, the bathroom was fine! Our group leader told us this was a 5-star hotel but 3 is definitely more like it when many of the rooms are is so dated. Up on the 5th floor we called it the maid’s quarters, they are so small. In summary, hotel management have seriously dropped the ball in terms of maintenance and are riding on their reputation’s coat-tails.

I stayed at Hotel Moskva and would like to highlight in particular an issue related to the rooms. The standard room types are not clearly distinguishable on the website: the photos do not make it easy to understand the actual differences. At check-in, I was assigned a rather small room, with a bathroom much smaller than expected based on the images seen online. After reporting the issue to reception, the staff proved to be extremely professional and helpful. Despite the hotel being fully booked, they took immediate action and the following day I was moved to another standard room, significantly larger and with a more adequate bathroom. The hotel itself is historic, elegant, and very well maintained. The staff is courteous, attentive, and customer-oriented. Overall, a positive experience, especially thanks to the effective handling of the issue. However, clearer presentation of room types on the website would be highly recommended.
