“Excellent choice for a quick visit to central Singapore”

I recently stayed here for the third segment of my first round-the-world trip. At the time I booked this trip, the hotel was called 30 Bencoolen, but by the time I arrived in November, it had just been renamed to Oakwood Bencoolen. First, the positives. The room was small but was comfortable and clean, and I slept well. No unusual sounds or sights noted. The on-site fitness center is very good and I was pleased to get some exercise done during my trip. It has a multi-purpose adjustable machine for strength training. There is a 7-Eleven next door if you need to buy drinks or snacks. The hotel is also conveniently located next to the Bencoolen metro station and near several bus stops. The on-site laundromat is excellent and easy to use. The washer and dryer both take Singapore dollar coins. If you need Singapore dollars, the front desk staff can direct you to the UOB ATM on the outside of Fortune Centre just down the street which can dispense a variety of different types of bills. And if you need to convert bills to coins, there is a machine in the laundry room for that. The washer has a built-in detergent dispenser so you don't need to add that separately. Now, the negatives, which is what we all read Tripadvisor for. The elevator is slow. If you are on the top floors or you want to visit the pool, be prepared to wait. My taxi driver helped me solve a mystery I had encountered when I was trying to book a Singapore hotel; why hotels just outside of a certain line on the map seem to be so much cheaper, and hotels inside that line, including this one, are so much more expensive. It turns out that Singapore has congestion pricing toll gantries everywhere in the central area to discourage driving into the area, including on Bencoolen Street just before this hotel. The hotels inside the central area are more expensive because the tolls are part of their business overhead. The taxi stand visible on Google Street View is no longer there because it was replaced by a bus-only lane. Your driver will have to drop you off in an adjacent alley because he can no longer stop in front of the hotel. If your visit in Singapore, like mine, is too short to justify the hassle of installing a local eSIM, you will need to come down a few minutes early and ask the front desk to call for a taxi to get back to Changi Airport. Then the taxi will pull up in the alley on the side. I saw everything I need to see in Singapore on this trip, so I will probably not return for at least three to five years. I recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a pleasant, affordable hotel in the central area.

It was a one-night stay as I was on my way back to the US from Changi. 30 Bencoolen was ideal because it was so near the MRT, & many good eateries. It was a one-night stay as I was on my way back to the US from Changi. 30 Bencoolen was ideal because it was so near the MRT, & many good eateries. Although check-in wasn't till 2pm, the Front Desk manager Diana kindly allowed an early check-in. She was really helpful & got info for me on an attraction that I wanted to visit at Changi Airport. The rooms were nice, quiet & clean; the bathroom in particular was pristine. The mattress was very comfortable & conducive to a good night's sleep before the long flight home. Overall, the staff were very professional, helpful & friendly. No hesitation in recommending 30 Bencoolen.
