This boutique guesthouse is such a special little gem that is quirky and full of history. Located in Kempton Park, just a 10-minute drive from O.R. Tambo International Airport, it’s the perfect overnight stop if you want convenience paired with a relaxed, family-run atmosphere. Multi-generations of the family still live on site, and their love and care are evident throughout. The manor house itself is built from stone, with interiors decorated in antiques, hardwoods, and classic pieces that make you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. Family photos can also be found in the common areas, offering a personal touch. On arrival, I was warmly welcomed by Alfred, the Front of House Manager, who showed me to my charming room. Thoughtful details like the heater and heated blanket were already switched on (since it was winter), which then made me feel instantly at home. The room also featured a claw-foot bathtub and a classic pull-chain toilet that features a high-mounted tank with a chain that you pull to flush. These unique touches added to the old-world character of this place. While dinner isn’t offered on-site, ordering via Uber Eats is recommended and was seamless. Alfred managed the delivery with security then even plated my meal with proper cutlery and a tray, which was such a considerate gesture. Breakfast the next morning was another highlight. Even though I had an early departure and expected only a simple spread, Alfred surprised me with a fully cooked breakfast of eggs, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, toast, yogurt, and fruit. I left feeling very spoiled. I would happily recommend this guesthouse for anyone needing an easily accessible, character-filled overnight near Johannesburg airport. Do note that because it’s so close to the airport, you will hear planes taking off and landing, but the warmth, history, and hospitality more than make up for this.

“Brilliant alternative to an airport hotel”

I made a mistake on the booking and we landed a day early, Spoke to Alfred and he organised everything Inc the car, from calling at baggage collection to us been in our room it was only 40minutes 😉. What can I say they looked after us so well! I made a mistake on the booking and we landed a day early, Spoke to Alfred and he organised everything Inc the car, from calling at baggage collection to us been in our room it was only 40minutes 😉. We had The Dany it was a huge bed and fantastic room. Cold outside but warm in bed. We also had a great bottle of wine in the room that Alfred sorted out for us. The house and grounds are great and we felt like we were taken back in time and sitting in the lounge on a sunny morning overlooking the pool is a must. The breakfast looked amazing but we did not have any as we were suffering from jetlag. I would suggest it as an alternative airport hotel as it's so close but just so different to the hotel chains. We will definitely be back and use it a our stopover base in JNB

I've never been so surprised by a property! We turned up (after I messed up the dates at another local accommodation) and they kindly recommended us to try School Huis. We were blown away when we arrived! It's like an enchanted Victorian castle, complete with absolutely everything you could ever need. BUT, the best part? Alfred! What an absolutely amazing person, kind, friendly and literally so unbelievably helpful. He prepared our room within an hour when we arrived (as we had not previously booked) and recommended a fantastic place for dinner just 5 minutes away. He went to the shop to purchase a few drinks for us too, as we were pretty exhausted from a 5hr drive down from Kruger that same day. We got back from dinner and our room was ready, he helped with our bags, offered us breakfast AND there were ciders chilling in our fridge. I just can't believe it and the price is just unreal. Thank you SO much for accommodating us on such short notice (literally 10 minutes from phonecall to arrival) and thank you Alfred for being a total superstar! Hannah & Angus xxx

We were looking for a place to stay near O.R. Tambo airport. This place was very convenient. Contacted the property to see about dropping off our bags early while we went to shop for essentials for trip to Kruger, the response was quick indicating not an issue. Check in was easy and Alfred was so helpful with both the room and dining options near to guest house. The room was comfortable and clean. The included breakfast was delicious with many options. The gardens on the property attracted numerous birds including the long billed ibis. We would definitely stay there again if a stop over in Johannesburg.
