Having travelled extensively and stayed in a number of luxury hotels around the world, it takes something truly exceptional to leave a lasting impression. The Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid did exactly that. From the moment I arrived until the moment I reluctantly checked out, every aspect of the experience felt effortlessly elegant and genuinely world-class. Madrid is one of my favourite cities in Europe. I visit Spain regularly, particularly Madrid and Barcelona, and they have become places I return to time and time again. They combine beautiful architecture, outstanding food, rich culture and an atmosphere that always makes me feel welcome. The Mandarin Oriental Ritz is perfectly placed to experience everything the city has to offer while providing a peaceful sanctuary to return to after a day of exploring. The hotel itself is simply breathtaking. The restoration of this historic property has been carried out beautifully, preserving its timeless grandeur while incorporating every modern luxury you could wish for. Every room, corridor and public space has been designed with incredible attention to detail, creating an atmosphere that feels sophisticated without ever becoming intimidating. What truly elevated my stay was dining at the hotel’s two-Michelin-starred restaurant. I have been fortunate enough to experience several Michelin-starred restaurants over the years, but this was undoubtedly one of the most memorable culinary experiences I’ve ever had. If you have the opportunity, I cannot recommend the tasting menu highly enough. Rather than simply serving exceptional food, the evening felt like a carefully choreographed performance. Every course arrived with its own story, presentation and sense of theatre. The seafood courses were extraordinary, showcasing beautifully prepared fish alongside several imaginative interpretations of crab, each highlighting different flavours and textures with remarkable creativity. The finale was something I will remember for years. Dessert was inspired by the moon, presented inside an illuminated lunar sphere that slowly opened to reveal handcrafted chocolates representing different phases and features of the lunar surface. It wasn’t just dessert—it was edible art. It perfectly captured the creativity, precision and imagination that defined the entire evening. Throughout dinner, the service was flawless. The team anticipated every need without ever being intrusive, explaining each course with genuine enthusiasm and making the experience feel wonderfully personal. It is rare to encounter service that feels so polished while remaining so warm and natural. That same exceptional level of hospitality extended throughout the hotel. Every member of staff, from reception to housekeeping and the concierge team, made me feel genuinely welcome. Nothing was too much trouble, and every interaction reflected the Mandarin Oriental philosophy of discreet, personalised service. I stayed shortly after the festive season, and the hotel retained a wonderfully calm and elegant atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind while still being only moments away from Madrid’s world-famous museums, parks and vibrant streets. The Mandarin Oriental Ritz is much more than a luxury hotel—it’s an experience in itself. Whether you’re visiting Madrid for a special celebration, a romantic getaway or simply because you appreciate exceptional hospitality, this is a property that delivers at every level. Without hesitation, I can say this is one of the finest hotels I’ve stayed in anywhere in Europe. I left already looking forward to my next visit, and I wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else when returning to Madrid. This is a magnificent hotel in a great location close to lots of the great sights of Madrid. The lobby and adjacent Palm cafe are stunning, as is the outside terrace restaurant. There is an excellent gym, spa and swimming pool on level minus 2. Our room was spacious and included separate shower and free standing bath plus lots of storage, a tea and coffee machine, top of the range hair care equipment and more. The concierge helped us with a number of dinner bookings during our stay. Our stay coincided with my birthday and the whole team made it an unforgettable few days.

The Mandarin Oriental Ritz Madrid is one of those hotels where the experience extends far beyond the room itself. While our original room had been assigned as an accessible room (which we didn't require), the team quickly moved us to a standard room. Even then, the room was on the smaller side—but honestly, that's where the negatives end. The real magic is in the hotel's beautiful public spaces. The bar has an incredible atmosphere, with a lively yet sophisticated vibe that made us want to linger every evening. Even better were the people who work there—warm, engaging, genuinely fun, and always eager to make the experience memorable. The outdoor garden and terrace are another highlight, offering a peaceful oasis in the heart of Madrid that's perfect for drinks or a relaxed meal.

A beautiful hotel, wonderful people… but unfortunately one of the most inconsistent luxury hotel experiences we have had. I rarely write reviews. When I do, it is never to punish a hotel with a poor rating or simply to express frustration. My intention is always to provide honest and constructive feedback that I hope management will genuinely value. We came to Madrid to celebrate one of the most important moments in our family's life . our daughter's graduation. For this special occasion, we deliberately chose the Mandarin Oriental Madrid instead of returning to two other luxury hotels where we had previously stayed. That decision was made because we have enormous respect for the Mandarin Oriental brand. In fact, despite everything I am about to write, my confidence in the brand itself remains unchanged. This review is therefore not written out of anger. It is written because this beautiful property deserves operational standards that match the reputation of the Mandarin Oriental name. The biggest issue was never a single mistake. Luxury hotels are not expected to be perfect. Mistakes happen everywhere. The real difference between an average luxury hotel and a truly exceptional one is consistency. Unfortunately, consistency was exactly what we missed throughout almost our entire stay. Different employees gave different answers. Different departments appeared to have different information. Rules seemed to change depending on who happened to be working. None of these situations alone would have caused me to write this review. Together, however, they created an experience that simply did not feel like Mandarin Oriental. Arrival - not the welcome we expected After almost one hour in heavy Madrid traffic and temperatures of around 35°C, we finally arrived at the hotel. Naturally we were hot and exhausted. At a hotel of this level we expected at least a small welcoming gesture. A cold towel. A glass of water. A welcome drink. Anything. Instead we immediately entered an administrative check-in process. Our passports were requested. Our address details were requested. Only later did it become apparent that the team was not even aware of our guest profile or the programs connected to our reservation. What surprised us even more was that nobody explained any of our benefits. No explanation of our Fine Hotels & Resorts booking. No explanation of our American Express Centurion benefits. No explanation of our Fans of M.O. membership. No explanation of the hotel credit. No explanation of any available amenities. After we reached our room, I actually noticed information referring to some benefits and went back downstairs to ask reception whether they were aware of them. The answer was essentially: *"We are sorry... we probably sent the information to another room."* That should never happen. Guests should never have to discover their own benefits and then explain them back to the hotel. Breakfast -the moment where I first realised there was no consistent service standard This was probably the moment that disappointed me most. On our first morning an older gentleman and another waiter looked after us. They were absolutely wonderful. Professional. Warm. Attentive. Everything worked perfectly. Unfortunately neither of them worked during the following mornings. The difference was immediately noticeable. The next morning we wanted to sit on the terrace. The terrace was full. I politely asked whether it would be possible to reserve the next available table. The answer was very clear: **"No. We don't reserve terrace tables."** I would like to make something absolutely clear: **I completely understand that policy.** Many luxury hotels all over the world do exactly the same. I had absolutely no objection whatsoever. However, because there are hedges and visual barriers between the seating areas, I couldn't simply relax somewhere else while casually waiting. If I wanted the next available table, I literally had to stand nearby and keep watching. Instead of enjoying breakfast… Instead of relaxing… Instead of concentrating on my work… I found myself standing nearby almost like someone guarding a parking space, constantly watching whether somebody was leaving. It was uncomfortable. It was awkward. But I accepted it because those were apparently the hotel's rules. The following morning I followed exactly the same procedure. I waited. The moment a table became available, I sat down. A few minutes later a member of staff approached me. He politely asked me to move because the table had apparently been reserved for another guest. I reminded him that I had specifically been told the previous day that reservations were impossible. His answer was simply that the other gentleman had arrived earlier. Again... The issue was never the other guest. He had done absolutely nothing wrong. In fact, he was sitting comfortably elsewhere, drinking his coffee, smoking and working on his laptop. A member of staff later walked over to him and said, *"Sir, your table is ready."* He was then escorted to exactly the table I had just been asked to leave. That was the moment I realised the problem wasn't the table. The problem was consistency. If reservations are possible… Wonderful. If reservations are impossible… Also wonderful. Just don't tell different guests different rules. Luxury hospitality is built on consistency. Service Another example occurred immediately after check-in. After travelling for over an hour in the heat, I simply wanted a glass of water in order to take medication. We waited almost fifteeen minutes. I tried making eye contact. I raised my hand politely. Nothing. At one point I was literally following a waiter through the restaurant hoping he would notice me. He walked around the room and disappeared into the kitchen. This wasn't about luxury. It was about basic attentiveness. Wonderful employees… and others who clearly need more support This hotel has some truly fantastic employees. The older gentleman at breakfast. Several members of the restaurant team. The doormen were consistently warm, welcoming and professional. They genuinely represent the Mandarin Oriental brand. Unfortunately, the difference between the best employees and the weakest employees was enormous. People are the most important asset of any luxury hotel. Nobody expects perfection. But when guests politely mention a problem, employees should never react as though the guest is the inconvenience. Sometimes a simple *"You are absolutely right. We are very sorry."* would have been more than enough. Room 204 Our room itself was beautiful. Unfortunately the sound insulation was not. We could hear almost every word spoken in the neighbouring room. With all due respect, it is difficult to believe that this is unknown to the hotel. If these rooms are allocated to one family, I completely understand. Assigning them to unrelated guests, however, creates a serious privacy issue. The hotel kindly offered another room after my complaint. We appreciated the gesture. Unfortunately we had already unpacked everything for our short stay, making another move unnecessarily complicated. Housekeeping and attention to detail Luxury hotels are defined by details. There was no proper stationery in the room. Only a small pencil. It sounds insignificant. But these are exactly the little details guests notice in this category. Our daughter brought us flowers for her graduation. They remained in a drinking glass throughout our stay. Nobody from housekeeping ever thought to place them in a vase. Eventually they simply wilted. This isn't really about flowers. It is about attention. Check-out Our final surprise came at check-out. I normally never examine hotel invoices in detail. This time I happened to look because I wanted to check whether our lunch had been added. While doing so I noticed that our American Express hotel credit was incorrect. Instead of the correct USD 300 benefit, a much smaller amount had been applied. When I pointed it out, reception immediately apologised and corrected the mistake. Again… Had I not checked… Nobody would have noticed. This unfortunately completed a pattern that had started already at check-in. Final thoughts This is **not** a bad hotel. Quite the opposite. It is a beautiful hotel with outstanding potential and some truly exceptional employees. However, from our perspective, it currently lacks consistent operational leadership. Training. Internal communication. Quality control. Service standards. Attention to detail. All of these areas deserve careful review. I sincerely hope management reads this review in the constructive spirit in which it is intended. Because despite everything we experienced, I would still return. That probably says more about my admiration for the Mandarin Oriental brand than anything else. I genuinely hope that next time, the service will be every bit as exceptional as the beautiful building that houses it.
