HYPERION Hotel Basel

“Good location and value”

Good location and value. Easy access to multiple tram lines, close to the German train station and an easy trip to the Basel train Station. Friendly and helpful staff. We have been using this hotel exclusively in Basel for years.

They are absolutely amazing in terms of comfort but I have also learned they offer a “lounge” for a specific kind of booking where you have drinks and food the whole day! Considering how expensive basel is … this is the perfect match for a trip!

“Swiss functionality”

The hotel was clean and…..functional. The room was kind of stark with little to no decoration but, I guess that’s just a Swiss thing. The hotel was clean and…..functional. The room was kind of stark with little to no decoration but, I guess that’s just a Swiss thing. The bed was nice but the pillows were as flat as envelopes and the only cover was a duvet that got WAY too hot at night. Breakfasts were good with a large variety of foods available. The restaurant was only “okay” but maybe my judgement was skewed by a lackadaisical waitress. She brought our food out, gave me the wrong meal, and went over to another table to switch what I was given with what another guest had received (basically, she switched our meals). She wasn’t pleased that I didn’t find that acceptable and it showed with her demeanor for the rest of the night. Other than her, the rest of the Staff were friendly and professional. The hotel is in a convenient location and we would stay there again if we ever visit Basel again.

“Generic, but no Local Ambience”

This hotel was a choice of Viking River Cruises and understandably so....from their perspective. However, not from mine. This hotel was a choice of Viking River Cruises and understandably so....from their perspective. However, not from mine. Viking needed to unexpectedly accommodate 190 passengers for one night prior to a delayed departure due to high water. The hotel needed, thus, to attend to us via many more lunches, dinners, and next-day breakfasts and did so admirably. All of the meals, buffet-style, were generous and delicious. The servers were attentive and helpful. However, the tiny rooms were not. My room on the 6th floor actually had a cement cylindrical pillar protruding from the floor to the roof right in the middle of the window area.... which overlooked an industrial complex. I had previously spent 2 nights on my own in a smaller hotel much closer to the Old City and literally had 3 times the amount of space in both my bedroom and bathroom than I had in this hotel. A hotel like the Hyperion is probably best used by business people, tourists who want standard amenities like concierges, piano bars, and no "hassles", as well as American tour groups. I do not. There is no sense of "culture" or feeling of being anywhere other than in a high-rise standard hotel that could be anywhere in the world. The Hyperion is not even located within walking distance of the Old Town of Basel.... as was the small, locally-owned hotel I'd stayed in for the previous 2 nights.
