After two flights and three train journeys my wife and I arrived at Wengen train station on 8th June for a 12-night vacation. We were staying for our fourth stay in the Silberhorn Hotel, which is situated across the road from the station. At reception, we were welcomed by Dario, who offered us a cool drink of Prosecco, which was most welcome as we had been travelling for close to twelve hours. With the registration paperwork completed, we were given the keys to our room, 332, which we have stayed in before and love. We had a double bed, two bedside tables, each with a lamp, a double-size wardrobe with plenty of coat hangers, and two armchairs. There is also free wi-fi in all rooms, and a large wall-mounted flat-screen television with many channels. For those travelling from the UK, all the BBC channels are available as well as STV, UTV and ITV. The bathroom was bright with a full-size mirror in front of the hand basin, and there is also a bath and overhead shower. Toiletries are also provided as well as dressing gowns. Outside, on the balcony, is a small table and two chairs. and a beautiful view. From here, we look down and across the Lauterbrunnen valley, and also the snow-capped peaks of the Breithorn and Silberhorn mountains. It is also a place to people watch down on the station as the trains come in and go. I have heard some negative reports on TripAdvisor about the rooms looking a bit worn or tired. I'm sorry, but I can't say that about any of the rooms that I have seen. After unpacking. it was time to go to the restaurant for dinner. We were met at the door by Catalin, who was pleased to see us. We have known him from our two previous seasons. Food, as always, was delicious and filling. I require a gluten-free meal, and when booking my trip with Swiss Holiday Company, they always inform the Hotel of my requirements. So on our first night, Giuseppe, the chef, came out of the kitchen to see my wife and me. We have known Peppe for many years, when we used to holiday in the Belvedere Hotel in Wengen, where he was the chef. Each evening, Peppe would show me what I could or could not have from the menu, and should it not be gluten-free, he would cook it for me, The next day, we returned to our room after a day of hiking. We were pleasantly surprised to find an ice bucket and bottle of Prosecco, which was a present from Delila, the Hotel Reception Manager, for being return customers. Having been there in February. We decided to use the outside jacuzzi to release our aching joints. There is also a second jacuzzi indoors, along with a Fitness Room, Spa, Relaxation Area, and Sauna. That evening, we met Faustina, who was ecstatic at seeing us again after our two previous stays. The Hotel also has an outdoor Terrace, where you can book a table for a Fondue and drinks. During our stay we met the Hotel Manager, Christian Hofgen, who was a real pleasure to talk to. Thanking us for our return visits, asking if everything was ok for us or if he could do anything to help. I did tell him that all of his staff are a credit to the hotel. The ones we already knew from our previous visits were so glad to see us back, while others remembered us. but we did not know their names, and they would stop us in the corridor for a chat. So to Dario, for being so welcoming at reception, Jenny the Dining Room Manager and Anna Marie the Deputy Manager, to Catalin, Faustyna, and Tommy the Servers in the Dining Room, and Gabrielle and Amira who were servers on the Terrace, thank you for your friendliness and professionalism. In the mornings at breakfast, Barbara was on duty most mornings and always made sure my gluten-free rolls were available. Thank you Barbara, To Delila the Reception Manager, you are a real gem, and can sort out any problems before they escalate. We thank you for your kindness, generosity, and friendliness, and for your invitation for Lynn and me to join you and your mum for some refreshments in Wengen. Thank you. Will we return? Yes, we certainly will.

This review is a must read for those struggling to decide with how to plan their stay in the bernese oberland / interlaken region. We went to grinderwald , interlaken , wengen , murren and most of the neighboring towns and villages and literally fell in love with wengen. The best of all . Its a small town , car free with a very relaxed and chill vibe . Great for those who want to spend some quality time with their family whilst being in the hills. Hotel silberthorn is right opposite the station in Wengen . The location is extremely convinient. The hotel is a legacy property dating back years ago. The rooms were nice and equipped . Mario at the reception was kind enough to give us another room as the first one was very small and compact. Also it was my dads birthday so he was kind enough to gift us a bottle of sparkling wine as a gesture .The views are outstanding from the property. Yes some people can find it expensive as we did but considering the convenience and location and the prices of other hotels at different regions like grinderwald which by the way is very commercial, this property somewhat justifies.

“Flies on the breakfast”

The Hotel Silberhorn is ideally located directly beside Wengen station and next to a supermarket, making it extremely convenient. Our room was clean, and the reception team were the warmest, friendliest and most helpful staff we experienced during our time in Switzerland. The breakfast selection looked decent and the food appeared to be of good quality. Unfortunately, there was a serious problem with flies, which were landing all over the uncovered food. The staff in the breakfast room appeared to regard this as normal and made no attempt to cover or protect the items. We decided not to eat breakfast because we did not want to take the risk. I raised the issue with reception and was told that flies are common in Switzerland at this time of year. That may be true, but flies exist everywhere during warmer weather. Hotels and restaurants still need proper management systems in place to keep them away from food. The food should be covered and protected. The water pressure in our room was also extremely poor. The shower produced little more than a dribble. The shower curtain covered only half of the bath and appeared to be positioned at the wrong end. The showering space was already very narrow, so we were left trying to wash under a weak flow of water while constantly fighting to stop the curtain from sticking to us. It made a basic function unnecessarily unpleasant. Another surprise was finding a price list beside the in-room tea and coffee facilities charging CHF 1 for a coffee capsule, instant coffee or a tea bag, with milk powder and sugar priced at CHF 0.50 each. The card did not state that these charges applied only to additional supplies or refills, so it appeared that even the basic refreshments placed in the room were chargeable. This was a first for us. Switzerland often seems unusually focused on additional charges, whether for tap water in restaurants or even a tea bag in a hotel room. Overall, the Silberhorn is a clean, well-located and otherwise well-run hotel with an exceptionally pleasant reception team. It is therefore a real shame that the breakfast hygiene concerns, poor shower facilities and unnecessary extra charges significantly spoiled our experience.
