While the building is very interesting and the views from the top of the hill are fabulous the rooms themselves are a bit of a disappointment. Beware that not all rooms have an air conditioner which is not clear when you actually book.. We had to upgrade room with AC which was very important because it was extremely hot those days in Lucerne with temperatures around 40°. The room itself was old and somewhat run down the bathtub had a crack in it. It did seem the layout was a little weird because the space in the room was relatively small while the bathroom was extremely big. Breakfast was okay but just okay with limited options overall. We did not eat dinner at the hotel but rather went downtown. The other Advantage the hotel has is that it does have parking but parking is not free and they do charge for it. I would definitely recommend to come for the views and maybe have a drink on the Terrace especially in the evening or at night.

“Staying at the landmark”

The hotel is truly towering above Lucerne and the lake. You can see its distinctive tower from almost every part of the city. The hotel is truly towering above Lucerne and the lake. You can see its distinctive tower from almost every part of the city. It’s not that old though, it was only completed into its current iconic fairytale-castle appearance in 1901. Access is either by car/taxi or using the Gütsch Funicular. The bottom station of the funicular is at the less salubrious part of the city and it’s also used by the residents living near the hotel. Once we got to the top there was quite a bit of arduous climb (with luggage!) along stairs and lifts before making our way to the small reception area. No assistance was offered throughout – this service seems to exist only for guests arriving by car. Our corner Superior Room on the third floor had a turret overlooking the city. It was very tastefully decorated in period furniture, very comfortable bed and a large wardrobe with safety box, with plenty of seating. Unusually, it didn’t have tea/coffee making facilities though the kettle was provided on request. Bottled water was provided in the fridge. Bathrobe and slippers were supplied, as well as the electronic scales. WiFi signal was good. TV had a variety of foreign-speaking programmes, English included. The bathroom was large, with His and Hers sinks, bathtub/shower combo and Molton Brown products. We dined at the Lumières Restaurant on the lower floor of the chateau and the food, cooked by the Michelin-star chef, was superb. We didn’t have a breakfast at the hotel as, at SF 39, it was rather overpriced for us. Instead, we utilised a little café at the bottom of the funicular station. The staff, particularly the wonderful and helpful Valentina, were friendly.
