Location was absolutely perfect. Water view was amazing and hotel was clean and very nice. We had a wonderful stay and the staff was excellent.

Nice place and all amazing. rooms are big than our expectations. Provide free internet on town and transport cars.Breakfast can be cooked by order, fresh. Staffs are nice and helpful booking tickets.

Our room balcony had an excellent view of the water and city. Great place to sit and drink a cup of coffee in the morning. The concierge did a great job helping us plan several trips. The one negative would be that the room was a very small and not much space for our luggage.

This was not our first stay in Luzern — we had previously stayed at another well-regarded, quality hotel — but we would have no hesitation in recommending Hotel des Balances in preference. As one might expect from a hotel of this quality, the attention to detail and cleanliness is unimpeachable. The staff are efficient, friendly and accommodating. Our room was maintained daily to a very high standard, and the food — at breakfast and at the one evening meal we ate there — was superb. But beyond that, it was an overall feeling of belonging, even for just eight days, that made us feel welcome and want to return. Hotel des Balances isn't a big hotel; it's small enough to be personal. Whether in the bar, on the terrace or in the lounge, we never felt like clients simply being attended to. We felt recognised — the staff treated us with the utmost respect, but also with good humour and understanding. The setting is perfect: in the old town, on the edge of the River Reuss, close to the honeypot of Unter der Egg but not overwhelmed by its crowds. It's convenient for the shops and less than ten minutes' easy walk from the quay and the railway station. The famous facade, with its painted murals, is every bit as superb in person as in the photographs. We had a south-facing room overlooking the river, and we'd thoroughly recommend that — it's wonderful to look out over the Kapellbrücke and towards the lake, both for the evening activity and to watch Luzern wake up. With daytime temperatures frequently around 35°C and overnight rarely dropping below 20°C, the air conditioning was very welcome throughout, as were the automated window blinds. Breakfast was a generous spread — meats, fresh breads, cereals and juices among the highlights. Two very minor downsides. Reception is up a flight of stairs from the Metzgerrainle entrance, so if you arrive on foot with luggage (as we did, having walked from the station), ask for help or use the alternative entrance via Unter der Egg through the bar — there is a small lift. The other oddity is breakfast pricing: unless you're on an inclusive tariff, you choose between a fixed-price buffet or paying per item from the menu. This seemed to confuse the staff as much as us, and we ended up paying the buffet price regardless of how much we ate. No complaint about the cost — just the confusion.
