“Pure Serenity”

My wife and I just returned to Taipei after spending 2 nights at Mountain Lodge. We had a rental car that only my wife was allowed to drive. She is not used to driving up windy, narrow mountain roads and it took her a while getting used to it. It takes just over 30 mins to get to mountain lodge from Taimali township. The lodge is located 1100 meters above sea level and the views are breathtaking. I grew up in the Austrian Alps so I felt right at home a this kind of altitude. Our room was spacious and clean and comfortable. It is a bit basic without a fridge and we also had to bring our own towels but we really enjoyed our stay. They offer a traditional Taiwanese dinner, nothing fancy but really tasty and a lot of variety for $300NTD per person. My Taiwanese wife really loved the food and I could not fault it either. The breakfast was included and consisted of a basic ham and egg sandwich, coffee and tasty soy milk. Again, nothing fancy but quite nice and tasty. Unfortunately we only stayed two nights and on the day of our arrival we couldn't do much since it was raining quite heavily. On the second day we decided to drive to Taichung for sightseeing and on the third day we had to leave early in the morning to catch our train back to Taipei. We will definitely be back to Mountain Lodge for some hiking and to enjoy the serenity and to enjoy the sounds of Nature.

“Huanshan Yazhu （环山雅筑）Taimali, Taitung”

Stayed two nights at Huanshan, at NT1500 per night. From Taimali Station, you have to get a cab up. If no cab is available at the station, just approach the ticketing staff and you will get help. The fare is NT600 per way (about 30 mins ride). My cabbie charged me NT500 for the trip up as I shared the cab with a couple. However he drove me to the nearby Taimali beach, which is beautiful, while he picked the couple arriving on a later train. Better to arrange with cabbie for the trip down at the same time. Huanshan is located higher up on Taimali than most others, about 30 mins walk to Wang You Gu (忘忧谷) but pretty isolated. There is one restaurant which is open at certain hours. During August when the daylilies are in full bloom in Wang You Gu, it would be really lovely to stay here. I have missed the peak, but still it was beautiful. The room is clean, bed comfortable enough. No aircon, but you won't need it given the mountain air, but there is a powerful fan. No fridge in room. Bring your own wine (luckily I did) as the restaurant does not sell beer all the time, only when the owners happen to go to town and get some! It is also one of a few minsus on Taimali which structure is of solid steel. Toiletries are basic, they do not provide the usual bath towels, only disposable ones. Breakfast is basic - sandwich, coffee and soya bean drink. There is absolutely nothing to do except take long walks amidst the beautiful environment, and play with the resident dog! You can walk down to the visitors' centre (about 40mins?) which has a convenience store and there is another minsu there, Ching Shan Minsu, plus a few eating places. I did not ask about wifi as I got my data plan from the Telco at the airport on arrival in Taiwan and it worked pretty good. I have really enjoyed my stay as I love the solitude and quietness of the place and the views but many may find it a tad boring.
