I just visited Sun Moon Lake and stayed at Laurel Villa bed and breakfast. I highly recommend Laurel Villa for the following reasons: 1. The location is convenient. The bed and breakfast is located right across from Shuishe pier and about 3 minutes walk to the bus transit center. It is close to many shops, restaurants, the bike trail and Hanbi walk trail. 2. The room is spacious, clean, modern with a nice soaking bath tub, and comfy bed. We booked one king bed room. The room has a lot of space for our full size suitcases, a sitting area, coffee table with electric kettle and a small fridge. The best part is the nice bathtub in the covered balcony which we used every night to relax after a full day of activities. 3. Soundproofing in the room is excellent. Even though the B&B is located in the center of Shuishe, it is very quiet in the room and you don't hear any noises from other rooms. 4. Staff are friendly and helpful. The staff is so friendly and helpful. They make sure your stay is great and give you information on how to get someplace and how to enjoy Sun Moon Lake. 5. They offer free sunrise bike tour. The owner personally took us on the bike trail and shared the history of Sun Moon Lake in English and Mandarin. The sunrise bike tour takes about 2.5 hours and it is absolutely the highlight of our trip. The bike rental is a separate cost and they use a bike shop that charges only NT 100 for this sunrise tour. If you decide to stay at Laurel Villa, the sunrise tour is a must to do! 6. Their complimentary breakfast is homemade Taiwanese breakfast with some Western options. The breakfast is yummy if you are into Taiwanese food. They also have some cold cuts and toast. We spent two nights at Laurel Villa and absolutely enjoyed our stay. Hope you will give it a try if you are in Sun Moon Lake.

Care versus Comfort There are places you stay for comfort, and then there are places you remember because of care. Laurel Villa in Sun Moon Lake is the latter, where heart and hospitality outweigh thread counts and marble tubs. The standout of our stay was undoubtedly Mr. Chen, the owner, whose genuine warmth, humility, and pride in his village and heritage are rare. He personally took us on a 5am cycling tour around Sun Moon Lake, a quiet, soul-stirring experience we would never have accessed on our own. Watching the mist roll over the lake’s glassy surface with no one else around except birds and reflections was magical and made more so by his commentary, insight, and palpable love for the place he calls home. The B&B itself is thoughtfully designed, with details that speak of a host who truly cares. From the tree-shaped notice board with handwritten messages to the tasteful blend of wood, iron, and minimalism, Laurel Villa balances simplicity with elegance. It doesn’t pretend to be a luxury hotel but it offers something more: authenticity. Our room was comfortable and clean, with just the right touches, no excess, no clutter. The breakfast was quietly excellent: fresh, local, nourishing, and unpretentious. Even the tea felt curated. Location-wise, the villa is perfect, just steps from the Shuishe Pier, but tucked away enough to feel personal and peaceful. You wake up to a sense of being “within” the lake rather than just near it. Laurel Villa is a reminder that true hospitality is not about extravagance, but attention and sincerity. If you’re seeking flash, look elsewhere. But if you value character, soul, and a sense of place, this is where you’ll find it.

“Boutique hotel, great location”

Small boutique hotel in Sun Moon Lake. I have booked 3 rooms during our stay, my room is smaller with no windows and no socket for hair dryer in the bathroom, outside the bathroom also has no other mirror… which is quite inconvenient. Small boutique hotel in Sun Moon Lake. I have booked 3 rooms during our stay, my room is smaller with no windows and no socket for hair dryer in the bathroom, outside the bathroom also has no other mirror… which is quite inconvenient. The triple room is way larger, tatami style even with a small balcony and tub. The breakfast is better than I expected, a full spread with all sorts of Asian and western breakfast selections, juice, coffee etc, all delicious. Would recommend this hotel for short stay.

“Fantastic stay at Sun Moon Lake!”

Beautifully renovated and very clean. Great location across the street from Shuishe pier and a short walk from the main bus station. Breakfast was plentiful and had good variety. But the best thing about this place is the staff. The owner leads a wonderful sunrise bike tour of Sun Moon Lake in both Mandarin and English. Definitely worth getting up early for it! Also, the staff helped us book a paddleboard lake tour that turned out to be my kids' favorite part of our 2-week trip around Taiwan. The staff was very attentive and had great lunch/dinner recommendations.
