“Good Hotel and Location”

This hotel was in a very good location right across the street from the wall and moat around the old town. The rooms were large and clean. There was a good breakfast with cooked-to-order eggs, waffles, and pancakes plus other items. It was very easy to explore the old town from this location.

It is a new hotel with a good location, good value for money. There is a food court with many restaurants right opposite of the hotel. The lobby is a big open area, one side is allocated for breakfast and since it is part of the lobby, the whole lobby may smell of food during breakfast hours. Breakfast is good with many choices, mainly Asian. The Deluxe King Room is spacious, well-furnished but there is no cupboard, instead there is an open cloth hanging rail. There are no closed storage facilities but there is a long wall to wall counter which acts as a table and storage place. Ther is a similar wall to wall shelf behind the bed. The room has a safe box, tea making facilities and a small fridge. The bathroom is compact but okay. There were only two bath towels, no hand or face towels. There are toiletries in the bathroom, but you need to request a dental kit, a razor and a slipper if needed. The TV has only local channels. The bed is comfortable and the Wi-Fi is good. The hotel has no pool or gym.

I had a bit of a mixed experience at Icon Park Hotel, and I think it’s important to temper expectations, especially considering they market themselves as a four-star hotel. First off, the location is fantastic—right near the moat of Chiang Mai’s Old Town, making it super easy to access all the major tourist spots. Plus, the hotel is very accessible when it comes to tour providers who will pick you up right from the lobby. The staff are mostly friendly and polite, which is a given in Thailand, but unfortunately, there are some key areas where the hotel falls short of the four-star standard. For example, when I called down to request a shaving kit, I received a packet with just a disposable razor. No shaving cream—something that, at the very least, I expected from a four-star hotel. When I called the reception to clarify, they confirmed that’s all they provide and suggested I use soap as a substitute for shaving cream. This is a basic expectation that they clearly missed, and it was frustrating to deal with. Then, there was an unfortunate incident involving a bar-goer who came into the hotel lobby and vomited in the wash basin. The mess wasn’t cleaned up until the following afternoon, which seemed like a huge oversight in basic cleanliness and customer care, especially for a 4-star hotel. Even a decent budget hotel wouldn't tolerate such filth. On another occasion, the fire alarm went off on my floor, which was triggered by someone smoking on the floor. The response from the hotel staff was concerning, highlighting a lack of training in health and safety issues. They disappeared from the lobby for about 10 minutes, leaving guests confused and unsure about what to do. There was no guidance or aid available whatsoever. It took quite some time before staff reappeared and nonchalantly assured us it was a false alarm, acting like nothing happened at all. In such a situation, clear communication and quick action are essential. Lastly, while this might be a personal preference, weather in Chiang Mai can sometimes get a bit chilly during January, and may require a warm shower for minor comfort. However, the hot water capacity in the hotel room shower was very limited, and the wash basin didn’t even have hot water whatsoever. It’s a small detail, but one that adds up when you’re trying to stay comfortable. Overall, the hotel isn't terrible, but it falls short in several areas that are crucial for a four-star experience.
