We recently stayed at the Cumberland Hotel in Bournemouth as a family of four and overall had a good holiday, although there were a few areas that could be improved. The hotel’s biggest strengths are its location, pool area and staff. The location is fantastic, being right next to the beach, and the sea views are lovely. The walk back up the hill from the beach can be challenging, particularly for older guests, but overall it’s a great spot. Reception staff were excellent throughout our stay – always friendly, helpful and professional. The dining room manager, Mirabelle, was particularly impressive and ran things very well. It was noticeable when he wasn’t there, as service sometimes felt rushed and the restaurant appeared understaffed. The pool area is excellent and we really enjoyed spending time there. However, some guests reserved sunbeds for long periods without using them, and this didn’t seem to be monitored. Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice. Evening meals were generally enjoyable, especially for meat eaters, although vegetarian options could be improved. One fish dish we ordered was disappointing, with very little fish once the breadcrumbs were removed. Our room was a little small for a family of four, and there were some maintenance issues. The television was glitchy and didn’t work properly, and we ran out of toilet paper during our stay. The cleanliness was acceptable, but there is room for improvement. We also noticed that one of the reception area toilets was out of order for several days without being repaired. The hotel still has a lovely atmosphere, but in places it feels as though it could benefit from some refurbishment and attention to detail, such as paintwork, lighting and general upkeep. The Cumberland is a beautiful hotel with great potential, and a little investment would help it maintain the high standards its reputation deserves. One small disappointment was parking. Guests who book directly receive free parking, while those booking through third-party websites do not. As we spent money in the hotel on meals and drinks throughout our stay, it would have been a nice gesture if this benefit could be extended to all guests. Overall, despite a few issues, we had an enjoyable stay thanks to the excellent location, pool facilities and friendly staff. With some improvements and maintenance, this could easily become an outstanding hotel once again.

Hi we came for drinks as staying in the ocean beach spa , Cumberland is definitely far more inviting than ours , a little slow though on drink service but I must say Oliver was very quick and very polite x

Unfortunately, the hotel did not offer good value for money, and overall our experience fell well below what we would expect from a 4-star property. The outdoor terrace area was particularly disappointing. The artificial grass was dirty and the seating was uncomfortable, making the area feel poorly maintained and not somewhere we wanted to spend time. We were also surprised to find that guests have to use the gym at a neighbouring hotel, which is not what we expected from a 4-star hotel. The bathroom was another disappointment. There was no shampoo or conditioner provided. When we contacted reception, we were simply told that there was soap in the dispenser that we could use instead. This felt inadequate for the standard of accommodation advertised. We were informed that there was no lifeguard on duty at the pool, which we accepted. However, during our stay, my husband had to jump into the pool to rescue a young man who was in serious difficulty and appeared to be drowning. What was particularly disappointing was that when the manager came out afterwards, there was not even a simple word of thanks or acknowledgement for my husband’s actions. Overall, we found the service, facilities and attention to detail did not reflect a 4-star hotel. Unfortunately, based on our experience, we would not choose to stay here again.
