“Good convenient hotel”

Very convenient city-centre hotel in a grand old building. Lovely large room with a lovely large bed. All very clean and comfy. Great shower. Good buffet breakfast. We will be going back

Stayed for a long weekend to see the snooker. Check in was smooth, we were given a room on the lower ground floor (room 101) It was a spacious room and had the bonus of patio doors which opened into a courtyard with a table and chairs. Beds were comfortable, shower was super powerful! The bedroom was quite close to the breakfast room so it was noisy early on, which wasn’t ideal when trying to have a lie in. The courtyard outside also seemed to be a place laundry bins were left, which again was noisy right outside the window early on, which did wake me up. The air conditioning also seemed to have a mind of its own. I set it to 19c and when I woke up it was baking as it had turned itself up to 23c! We also noticed shortly after check in that the toilet didn’t flush. Someone called the room to check the room was ok and we told them about the toilet. They said someone would fix it. Returned to the room on Friday night and it was still broken so we had to use the toilet near the breakfast room. We told reception twice again on Saturday about the toilet, again nothing was done about it! They said it would be sorted Sunday morning. We were out most of Sunday, but again when we returned Sunday night the toilet was still broken. When we checked out I mentioned it and the lady on reception was very apologetic and gave us a 15% refund, which was nice of her and we were happy with that. But when staying in a pricey hotel, you don’t expect to have to constantly mention an issue for it to be ignored. Hopefully it will be fixed for when the next guest stays in the room. We would come back because the location is fabulous but ask for a room higher up.

We stayed just as a great night out. We arrived and there a very convenient drop off point outside the hotel. Check in was straightforward, but unfortunately I had to go back down to reception as neither door key card worked. When we entered the room is was very cold. There’s instructions on the wall regarding the workings of the heating. I followed the directions, but no heating came on. I eventually phoned reception where the lady replied “No problem, we can switch it on from here”. Well, it is a problem when you arrive and the room is like a fridge, and then you have to call to get the heating switched on. We had a great night out and returned around Midnight. Once in the room it was still a little chilly, but warmer than it was earlier. We slept ok, then breakfast… At £20 each we both thought it could have been much better. The fried eggs were congealed, the bacon was heat lamp nuked, and the 2 pieces of black pudding were rock hard! At almost £200 for the night you expect a little more, but, it won’t stop us returning as the hotel is in a very convenient place, however, it would need to improve on our first visit

We paid a bit more for this hotel than we usually pay as a treat but I was really disappointed. It does the basics ok comfy bed hot shower friendly staff but that’s about it. I was disappointed with the room on the 5th floor as it only had a skylight window which coupled with the brown slightly tired decor made it gloomy. Headboard was peeling which gave reminders of past guests which no one likes in a hotel room. Was glad of the top floor location later when we got back though as it backs onto a party square when the ambulance service set up a pop up drop in centre for all those who’ve had too much to drink. Breakfast was disappointing. I expected something extra or a bit different for the price but it’s your basic cheap cooked fayre rendered unappealing by having been dried out under heat lamps. The pictures showed a variety of dishes of fruit but in reality there was a single dish of fruit salad which was mostly tired looking apple. There was a bowl of fruit though but just basic. The breakfast room is in the basement , cramped and a bit dingy. Maybe the selection is poor as they don’t have much space but it feels very “no frills” using cheap ingredients. If I’ve had better for less. I think we paid £80-100 more than we should for our room in my view. There a car park deal but it’s hardly next door so we got soaked getting back to our car. Ticks the basic boxes of hot shower and comfy bed but wouldn’t stay here again.
