“Nice hotel, breakfast service could be better”

Stayed for a weekend while attending a wedding locally. Generally the hotel was good however small details let it down from getting 5 stars. The hotel has retained plenty of it's historic charm and is in keeping with the age of the building. The bedrooms were of a decent size with a very comfortable bed. While it was warm in the room the window opened and stayed open and we had also been provided with a fan which was sufficient to keep the room cool. The bathroom was also large with a walk in shower with very warm well pressurised water, which is a surprise for hotels in general. There are two issues which let the hotel down. Firstly communication. Having made a booking through a travel website, it mentions parking has to be pre-booked which was requested at the time of booking. No confirmation was ever received that this parking had been reserved for us. Knowing we had a reserved spot on arrival would have been beneficial. However the hotel reserve the spaces with a cone with your name on, so once you know where your spot is, it is easy to come and go as you please without the worry of someone taking your spot. Secondly and more importantly, breakfast. Again this comes down to organisation. On both days we had breakfast in the hotel there seemed to be disorganisation. Upon arrival you are seated at a table, however on both days this was missing items that was present on other tables, be it glasses or teaspoons or milk jugs giving the appearance that the tables are hurriedly turned around with not much thought to whether they are correctly set. The same can be said of the cold buffet which doesn't seem to be restocked as the items are consumed. We did not go for breakfast at the end of the service but the buffet on both days was well under half empty and wasn't restocked while we sat and ate. So if you are into your fruit and yoghurt perhaps you are best going for breakfast early if you want some. The breakfast is then supposed to be served with toast and pastries, on the first day this was completely forgotten until prompted when they hadn't arrived. While the quality of the hot breakfast items is nice the cooking does not seem consistent. On the first day the sausage was only just cooked while the potatoes and bacon couldn't have been much more cooked without becoming charcoal, however on day two we had the reverse where the bacon and potatoes were just about cooked. We would go back and stay at the hotel as it is very comfortable for a reasonable price. Just adding some organisation to the breakfast would lead to a better service and would be a much better experience

“Average”

The Hotel looks nice and clean and the staff were very helpful. However you really must book a parking space if you want one. My room was fine but I was expecting some decent toiletries and a softer bed. The breakfast had all the right components, but it wasn't very good and disappointing.

“Overpriced and overcooked chicken”

Popped in here with my daughter for lunch. We hadn’t reserved it but the restaurant wasn’t busy, the waitress advised us we could sit anywhere. We were presented with the menu and requested what we wanted to drink. We ordered. And I had the chicken dessert salad, my daughter had pizza, I found my salad nice but chicken was dry. My daughter said her pizza was nice, it was £10.50 for a side plate size, which is a lot ? I ordered a coffee and we ordered dessert, they took ages to come ani eventually had to request where they were. My daughter had the profiteroles and I had cheesecake, dessert are £7.50 for 5 profiteroles, Really!! So overpriced. I also noticed the chef came out and looked my up and down as I mentioned about the chicken been over cooked. Lunch was £46 which is so overpriced and portion sizes are small.

I’ve just finished a 3 night stay at this property (I stay for business every 2/3 weeks) and although I generally enjoy my stays, the service is not good enough. On the first 2 mornings of my stay, the pre-booked taxi (by the hotel reception was late). When I was checking out this morning, I asked the receptionist (‘Aa’) to double check if the taxi was on it’s way, as I had to get the 06:30 train. ‘Aa’ called the taxi and then spent the next 30 seconds apologising profusely to the taxi driver for having the audacity to get if they were on the way… “The guest wanted me to check..” “I know mate… but the guest asked me to call…” This made me feel rubbish and is unacceptable.
