“Great hotel with an amazing restaurant”

Visited with my partner a few weeks ago. What a find! Food was outstanding, service to match! Location is perfect. Walking distance to everything in York centre. The hotel rooms are all classically designed, so much history and personality. We will return

I spent 2 nights here, room and breakfast, (16-17 April) in room 5- my friend had room 7. It’s perfectly placed next to the city walls and within easy walking distance of all major places of interest. If you’re a light sleeper, have a room at the back (room 10?) as the little street outside was occasionally, noisy very late at night-not from residents of the Badger. Steep stairs to the rooms and no lift, so couldn’t recommend it if you’re not mobile, but the room was lovely, a VERY comfortable bed and shower/toilet. There was a nice choice for breakfast which set me up for the whole day. Although we didn’t eat dinner there, the bar is cosy and inviting and people ate there and in the dining room-meals looked good.

I want to give this hotel a better review because the location is great and the people are excellent, friendly, and helpful. HOWEVER. This is a very old building, with attendant old building problems. The heat worked sporadically in our room, and while we were given a space heater, it still makes for a cold exit from the shower when the bathroom radiator won't work at all. We were on the first floor, facing the back garden patio, so if you book the cheaper room, know that there will likely be some noise and people able to peer into your room if you have the curtains open until later in the evening. The noise starts early in the morning too, as this is a working pub and restaurant, lots of kegs banging about and such. All these issues may not be relevant to rooms higher up and we woke up just before the noise each morning, but if you're wanting to sleep late on the first floor, be forewarned. For the positive, as I said the staff is phenomenal, very friendly and helpful. Booking direct on their website will get you a discount in the restaurant and the food there was very good and the rooms (both in the hotel and restaurant) are beautiful, clean, and comfortable. You are a five minute walk from The Shambles and a few seconds out the door from York Minster Cathedral.
