When we arrived at the Royal Leonardo any skepticism we had was quickly allayed as we realized that we had left a bag on the train from Glasgow, the front desk immediately got on the phone, called us a cab and we retrieved the bag. Whew!!! The hotel is quite convenient close to Haymarket Train and airport tram as well as Grassmarket and all major attractions. It was neat, clean and very comfortable. Staff were courteous and helpful. Breakfast buffet (13 pounds per person) was quite hardy with a good variety of food. Couple of local bars nearby, great to connect with the wonderful and warm Scottish folks. Highly recommend this hotel.

Leonardo Royal Hotel Edinburgh is centrally located in Exciting Edinburgh with minutes walk to the Waverly train station and to the Royal Mile with all the souvenir shops and restaurants / cafe lining both sides. The hotel is modern, with clean and contemporary rooms. I love their beautifully scented The White Company toiletries and bright windows. Their complimentary bottle of sparking and still water each, are appreciated. The bed and pillow are comfortable, in a spacious room. Room decor and colour tones were earthy and pleasing aesthetically. My 4th Floor room in the front, afforded a nice view towards the train station. They offer a buffet breakfast with wide array of hot and cold dishes, as fuel for us to start the day. I even partook of Haggis again, which is breakfast for champions. Their restaurant is big with lots of seating, and different newspaper. Try and request for a room which is not facing the noisy next door construction site. The hotel Receptionist is friendly, helpful and understanding. Helen

“Cheap and cheerful”

Cheap and cheerful hotel in a good location! Very clean on arrival, had everything that we needed for a quick one night stay. Bed was very comfortable and had a great nights sleep! The breakfast though was awful! Buffet breakfast, everything cold and soggy which let it down and also the prices... more

Cheap and cheerful hotel in a good location! Very clean on arrival, had everything that we needed for a quick one night stay. Bed was very comfortable and had a great nights sleep! The breakfast though was awful! Buffet breakfast, everything cold and soggy which let it down and also the prices of food and drink is extortionate for the quality. Parking was £10 for the night, quite a spacious car park.

“Good location, but over-priced”

A good sized hotel convenient for the Haymarket train station and surrounding area, check-in was swift and efficient although getting to the room took somewhat longer with only one lift working. Although on the top floor, I still didn’t have much of a view, my room overlooked the hotel’s car park and the back of the tenement building opposite, but that did at least mean that it was nice and quiet being away from the road. The room itself was adequate, it’s difficult to really say much more than that. Clean and tidy, with everything one would expect, but certainly nothing in the way of any character. Facilities included a safe, iron and ironing board, and tea/coffee making facilities including a Nespresso machine, although there were no biscuits and the mini-bar/’fridge was completely empty, not even a bottle of water. The bathroom was a little on the small side, and the over bath shower was just connected to the taps which made regulating the temperature quite difficult, having to adjust hot and cold taps independently to try and get the desired result. The bath was also quite difficult to step out off, and wouldn’t be suitable for anyone with any sort of mobility issues, I wouldn’t have thought. Breakfast was an entirely help yourself buffet selection, and covered most bases including cereals, cooked, cold meat & cheese, fruit, yoghurt, pastries, etc., although the depth in each range was a little limited, with no hash browns with the cooked breakfast for example, no fish with the cold selection and just two bowls of yoghurt to spoon out yourself rather than individual pots. Neither the orange juice or the coffee from the self service machine were that great, but in fairness all the food that I sampled was decent enough. Drinks choice in the bar was a little disappointing with the only cider on tap being Magners. Why on earth would a Scottish hotel stock an Irish cider, when their own country produces the excellent Thistly Cross? Obviously they don’t subscribe to the concept of reducing food (or drink) miles. This bills itself as a 4 star hotel, but I really couldn’t see that, it seemed much more of a 3 star to me. There really is nothing wrong with it, but there’s nothing really great about it either, and for almost £200 a night I something more.
