Visiting this hotel for the second time, I was intrigued to find that it is still being ‘modernised’. A few years ago, the upper public area was being refurbished with most of the public area being on the lower level which was more than habitable. On arrival this time, it appears that the upper level is now finished, but the lower level is being given the treatment. On arrival, the receptionist was busy dealing with a customer on the phone. Hearing only her side of the discussion, it was apparent that I had a long wait ahead of me but in that time, it was interesting to hear her professionally handling a call which must have been very frustrating for her. Polite, understanding, competent, all words which add up to the skills you need when dealing with joe public. When she finally ended the call, she gave me a proffered apology and immediately started to book me in. Very professional. I had a room in the main hotel, overlooking the bridge and river with lovely views along the river Avon. Quite picturesque and with a great view of the working mill. Seems it has been restored and now provides electricity for the hotel. The room itself was pretty comfortable and had all the features you would expect. Clean, Tidy and warm. Bit soft for my liking, but did give a comfortable night’s sleep. Bit noisy with doors banging and people (staff) talking and I was wary that this would go onto the night but no, in the dark hours all was silent. The watermill runs 24hours and you can hear it if you are awake and as I suffer with an interrupted sleep pattern, I inevitably wakened and heard it. Really didn’t bother me as I went back into the land of nod without any problem. We ate in the restaurant on our first evening and It was pretty good. Not an extensive menu but what we both had, was excellent. My wife had the Old Mill Burger which consisted of a chicken breast, a mixed salad on a Brioch bun with chips with myself opting for the Caesar Salad with chicken & hard-boiled egg. A bottle of wine took our full bill up to just over £50 - pretty good value for money as the food was well cooked and tasty. Breakfast next morning was continental but with a pretty limited selection of items. A choice of 2-3 cereals, some cold meat, some cheese slices, hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit with toast and drinks. Tea/Coffee and the usual toast, marmalade/jam. Adequate would the word I would use. In the two days we were there, I got the impression only 3 staff (2 at a time) were running the entire front of house operation – reception, bar, breakfast waitress etc.. One has to say, they were all excellent. One surprise was that we were only there for two nights and our room was ‘made up’ on the first evening – not something that I would have expected. Would I go back? Certainly would as the scenery and atmosphere was lovely. It’s location means you can leave the car in the car park (£10 per stay – not per night), walk up to the main street and catch a bus into central Bath.
