We absolutely love St Michaels Resort! The facilities are first-class, with an amazing spa. The meals we had in Nourish were of a very high standard but with a really chilled vibe to the restaurant. We also had a fabulously well equipped room, with plenty of space. Oh, and the staff are super-friendly as well! And this is almost forgetting that you're only a couple of minutes walk from a fabulous beach and coastal walk - what's not to like?!

My partner booked us a night away in Lodge 1 and I was really expecting to be wowed due to the Spa's reputation in the local area. However it just missed the mark across several areas. We have used several spas in Cornwall and beyond so it would be fair to say we have a fairly high baseline. This is the most expensive spa stay we have had so we were expecting something special. We've never been to St Michael's Resort before so headed to the main reception and were greeted as if we should know where everything is. After an awkward 'yes so we've never been here before so where are we headed?' we had a short tour. Check-in for the Lodge was at 3.30pm so we kicked off our day a few hours beforehand in the Spa. We were greeted with an outstanding £30 payment on our spa bill (that was due to a system change over, but it took 3 people to discuss it, determine it was probably a mistake etc rather then just getting us into the spa and worrying about that on check out - where it remained and we just paid it). We got our towel, robes and flip flops and headed to get changed. The changing area was pleasant and clean, the lockers using the shell bands were a good idea to save any faff or remembering of codes. However only one loo in the changing area isn't ideal considering how many people are in the spa at one time. We had a Rasul treatment to start and thankfully the room was dark because we clocked some areas that were really tired, discoloured and rusty. The seats really aren't very comfortable in the steam area, at other spas the bench seats are curved and tiled in a way they are comfortable. I would personally give this treatment a miss in future. The loo outside this area... the plug in the sink was corroded and could have done with a really good clean. The deep relaxation room was nice but the amount of wires that are visible from lamps, diffusers etc is crazy. The vibrating chairs are comfy but controllers are unreadable due to being heavily worn and cracked in addition to the chairs sounding like you are sat over the engine on a bus. Just hope you are the only ones in the room as otherwise people are boiling the kettle every 5 minutes and chatting. This area seems to be an after thought whereas in other spas in the area there is better attention to detail in this type of space - really needed after some treatments. We had 2 hours to use the hydrotherapy main spa area. During our time slot it was just so busy to really enjoy it. Every chair and recliner was reserved by other people's towels and robes despite not being used. We didn't use the hot tub as there was never fewer than 6 people in it, the warm mosaic beds were in use the whole time. I'm not sure if this was due to the bad weather so people weren't spread evenly between inside and outside but there really wasn't a point where we could just be a couple in a sauna or steam room. The hydrotherapy pool despite being super busy was lovely though! We only spent 40 mins there and called it a day as didn't want to watch and run to different areas to use them. If you don't mind sharing saunas with 5 others then this could well be great for you, but it isn't our cup of tea. I'm not sure what the mobile phone policy is in the spa - we don't take them in ourselves out of respect of others. But everyone else seemed to be scrolling through videos with sound on, taking photos and videos which is really off-putting. The spa really could do with someone in management looking at areas with a critical eye to pick up things for maintainance and put themselves in the customer's shoes (or eyes) to adjust where things are stored (for example from the pool you can see a glass window with crates and general boxes stacked high against it, frosted glass film would be a quick fix here,) After a quick change we headed to Nourish for a snack and some cocktails which were fab! The attentiveness of the waiter was brilliant and the atmosphere was great. Food service and bar service was quick! We checked in at 3.45pm and headed to the lodge. We arrived at the lodge after check in to find the cleaning staff still working - they were surprised to see us too! They were lovely but it was a bit awkward hanging around due to effectively a communication issue. The lodge itself is a great concept, very clean and spacious, but some shabby areas with black mould due to moisture ingress on MDF skirting that seems to have been there for months. With the price point of the lodge mould and peeling paint really needs to be addressed. There are so many hidden remotes with no instructions for the fireplace and other bits around the room which was fairly annoying. Please stick some instructions in one of the many drawers! The curtains also don't pull fully across the sliding door due to being hung lopsidedly. The bathroom heating panel wasn't working, neither were the outside lights for the outdoor bath which due to the lack of privacy around the tub due to gaps in the hedge probably was a good thing! But again shouldn't be the case in a lodge if this price point. We didn't use the outdoor shower due to the lack of privacy with the outdoor shower as you can see through the slats right by the main spa path walkway. The copper bath was lovely at 10pm though! However there were top quality bamboo tissues and toiletries in the room. Nice selection of teas and a mini bar. It would have been nice to have fresh milk and oat milk in the fridge but I'm sure we could have picked some up from reception had we thought about it. We had a couples massage at the spa before dinner and it was excellent. I highly recommend! The two therapists were really welcoming and highly skilled. Dinner in the Brasserie was fantastic, the food was incredible. We were given menus with prices and then someone popped over to replace with menus without prices as if it was included as part of our stay, we didn't question it as assumed the hotel knew more than we did. However on check out dinner was on our bill and obviously it was not included! Again the cocktails were fab however my partners espresso martini was served in a glass with two chips on the rim that were sharp. That glass should never have made it onto the shelf after washing. Let alone be used by a bartender for an £18 cocktail. It was replaced when pointed out. We didn't bother with the health club pool during our stay as we didn't really know anything about the etiquette - could we wonder over in our robes etc? So no comments there. The selection at breakfast is amazing however no water available at the juice station and the execution of the 'cooked' breakfast was a bit of a lottery. My poached eggs were hard, my partner's eggs were runny. The English muffin was fridge cold and not toasted - pretty strange for an eggs royale! The fresh fruit and yoghurt toppings were fantastic though. The prosecco being included at breakfast is a nice touch too. Machine coffee was ok but you'd expect barista coffee included at a hotel of this calibre. However, there is an excellent coffee truck TIDAL COFFEE 1 minutes walk away towards the beach (Rising Ground Coffee - the finest Cornish brand roasted in Wadebridge!). The beach is nice and there is a good coastal path walk. All in all it was a lovely stay just quite a few areas took the shine off, enough for me to write a review. When you are paying a premium to stay in a spa hotel of this calibre the little details make the difference.
