Great beaches within a short walk, close to the business center with delightful shops and restaurants.

“A relaxing couple of days to celebrate a birthday 😊”

We have just arrived home in Hayle after another very relaxing mini break here for my birthday. We both feel very relaxed and recharged as we always do after staying at the Falmouth hotel There is so much right about the hotel and some things which could easily be improved. Yet we still gave it five stars , mainly for the wonderful view, the comfortable bedroom with a sea view, the relaxed ambiance which we love, but especially because of the staff. Everyone we spoke to was polite, helpful and made us feel that nothing was too much trouble. A special mention to Lorraine in the restaurant who was more than accommodating when things weren’t quite right at Sunday lunch. Outstanding service from her. As it was my birthday, we were given a bottle of fizz in the room, which was lovely. I reviewed this hotel in a very similar vein in February when we last stayed. There are still some improvements to be made which would make the experience almost perfect! There was a thick coating of fluff beside the bed on the electric sockets and the inside of the wardrobes were very dusty. The scones with our mini cream tea were yet again overcooked and hard like biscuits. The jam was better this time! scrambled eggs at breakfast the first morning were watery still and not very ‘eggy’ (have they even seen an egg😉😊) - the second morning the eggs were different, they seem to have been done in a mould and were much more yellow and more like eggs? (still suspicious it’s powdered or reconstituted🤔) Sunday roast was a big disappointment on my birthday. We waited half an hour to be served, then the beef was overcooked, as was the Yorkshire pudding. The cauliflower cheese was cold and not very pleasant. The roasts were frozen ones, as was the swede and carrot mash. Another couple were also complaining about the wait and the food. I will say though, that the chef was very helpful about our garlic intolerance and made sure that what we had as garlic free, Thank you. We then ordered deserts which didn’t arrive so at that point we decided to call it a day and go and get ice creams from across the road! When Lorraine (manager?) realised what had happened, she gave us a full refund without us asking for one! Excellent! When things go wrong, which happens in any hotel, it’s how it’s dealt with that makes the difference between staying there again and never going back.

Falmouth is one of my favourite places on the face of the earth, and I’ve been to quite a few. The combination of a location on one of the world’s largest natural harbours that played a vital role in the creation of the British empire, a thousand yachts to look at, nice beaches, some quirky shops and the unassuming pleasantry of the Cornish people is quite unmatched elsewhere. We lived in West Cornwall in the 1970s so we know about the weather and can tolerate it quite well, at least in summer you can guarantee it won’t snow! We return every year, usually renting a flat and last stayed at the Falmouth Hotel in the eighties, so it was interesting to be there again. We missed the hot spell and on opening the door of the Falmouth suite, the only room available, we wondered if, by mistake we had entered a freezer as there was no heat in the radiators and an icy gale swept through the open windows. Aged 18 I probably wouldn’t have noticed but at 82, my wife is a little younger, avoiding meeting the angel Gabriel for a bit longer needs a little warmth as I told the very pleasant man on reception. As would have been required on the sailing ships of old when they returned ‘to Falmouth for orders’ he and the first mate swept into action, closing windows and installing three very effective electric heaters, the room piping hot after a couple of hours. Although to our taste the incredibly ornate furniture is repulsive, the enormous suite was pristine, the view of the stormy sea dramatic, the also enormous bed comfortable. Oddly, when I congratulated the painter, who was working in the corridor, on the decoration of the room, he said it was on the list of 80 or so that he was to redecorate over the next twelve months or so. I get the feeling that quite a few of the staff are feeling their way towards the perfection that will arrive in six months or so but meanwhile the breakfast was excellent and everyone we met doing their best to be pleasant and helpful. Guests can even learn a little of the Cornish version of English. When I went to reception to report a fault on the room phone a man appeared at the room immediately, after tinkering for a few minutes, stating that he was unable to repair it but would send the phone expert up ‘directly’, which, as I already knew, usually means, as it did on this occasion, close to never. We will certainly be back next year to make an assessment of progress.
