I stayed at this hotel with a group of tourists. The service was excellent. The food, quality, and selection were excellent. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Beautiful views from the window. A good location for a base in the Lake District. Very flexible management, which is important when large groups visit this hotel. A very pleasant few days.

“Delightful Stay”

Great experience from start to finish. I was unable to travel on my first booked day due to train cancellations. I expected to lose my first night at my expense but at very short notice the hotel kindly moved my booking to the next day so I still got my full 4 night break. Customer service is clear… more

Great experience from start to finish. I was unable to travel on my first booked day due to train cancellations. I expected to lose my first night at my expense but at very short notice the hotel kindly moved my booking to the next day so I still got my full 4 night break. Customer service is clearly top priority at this hotel. Every staff member I encountered was delightful. Reception, bar, restaurant, housekeeping, facilities - all greeted me pleasantly whenever we met and made me feel welcome. The hotel is a bit shabby and could do with a refurbishment. However it is very clean and comfortable and the very high standard of customer service makes it a lovely stay. Thanks to all of you at The Cumbria Grand for my great break.

This hotel delivered in terms of location, excellent dining, attentive and pleasant staff and exceptional value for money. It is a traditional Victorian Hotel with decor that reflects the age of the building. Having said that, the bedrooms were very comfortable and serviced every day. There was ample tea, coffee and biscuits supplied daily in the rooms. We stayed as three friends and used it as a base to explore the Lake District. We stayed here a several years ago and checking back on our stay then, it was a very similar experience. It’s an old hotel with plenty of character and lovely views across the bay. The good: Fabulous views, exceptional staff. Lovely reception, bar and dining areas. The restaurant was large and worked well and the food offered gave plenty of choice for most people although being vegetarian/vegan we were limited on choice but they did try to cater for us. The set up for breakfast worked well and there was plenty of choice with good ingredients. Lovely scenery and a short woodland walk within the grounds. The bad: Very dated rooms especially the bathroom which was very tatty, bath panel worn, bath with enamel chips. The sink was poor with the taps in a bad state. The toilet roll holder was broken and the radiator rusty and plenty of cobwebs. The shower was outdated but worked ok. Our room had ample storage and a nice size but poor quality furniture which has seen its day. The carpet was not very good either and there was plenty of dust around the lamp shades and other areas of the room. The bed was rather lumpy and we didn’t get a decent night sleep over the four nights we stayed here. It had a small tv which was ok but needed a much bigger one. We were in room 119 and I would not recommend this room to anyone staying here. We were on a coach trip and this was the hotel provided for the trip. We would return here on another coach trip but would hope that we had a better room next time.
