“Lovely hotel”

Beautiful old hotel with extremely pleasant staff. The room was very spacious and the bed so comfortable ! Breakfast was delicious too. Only the plumbing in the bathroom would need some seeing up to. I would definitely stay here again.

Returned to The Angel for Guildford Summer Pole event and was recognised by the friendly Receptionist. Thought I had ordered the toom I had previously occupied but was shown to a room that was described by the Receptionist as a, "Much better room". She was right. Lord Nelson was a spacious room with much hanging space for clothes and a very comfortable sofa. A bright, uncluttered space with sensible, period furniture. Being an old building, it is not disabled friendly and all rooms are accessed via a wide staircase with a rather strange old handrail. The snag with all rooms at the front is the noise from the High Street but the ones I have used have been comfortable and spacious. My room was also immaculately clean. There are nits to pick as with all such establishments but there are also undoubted advantages. I was pleased to see sparkling water as standard in the room as it makes the ingestion of the vast amounts of chemicals upon which my doctor insists much easier. I was disappointed not to see the wine glasses cleared for the second night and not to have the biscuits replaced (Same reason as previous sentence.) The robes provided coped well with rather "large" gentleman and it was good to get a face flannel that saves having to pack a wet home-provided one. On the whole, bathroom provisions were very well presented. Other than the lack of a lift and ground floor rooms, (which the Angel can not help) my major complaint was that, because I did not have a mobile phone, I could not contact Reception when it was required. The place is brilliantly situated and reasonably priced for what I got. I wish t had a restaurant and bar, though. I have re-booked for next year.

It had been a long time since I stayed at this historic hotel and since then there have been several renovations. Along with many changes over the years, the individuality and old style comfort still remains here, but just be warned that when the cabaret bar is open there can be party noise and music until just before midnight. I have noticed reviews on here which have been negative regarding the bar noise, but staff do warn everyone and there is a strict midnight curfew. I got a really good last minute deal on a Saturday for the Charlotte Suite, room 234 which is literally opposite the door to the bar, but after it was closed and everyone left it was incredibly peaceful and I didn't hear a sound. There are two doors, main entrance and another door to the room. Close both doors and noise is minimal anyway. The room is spacious, king size bed and I was impressed with the selection of different teas, coffees and chocolate chip cookies were included. I was a bit disappointed that it's a new walk in rain shower and no bath tub in the bathroom and there is no small fridge in the room which would be a useful addition. Nespresso coffee machine was good and luxury Duck Island toiletries in the bathroom was a bonus. The only thing that can be a bit annoying is that you have to call a mobile number to get staff to come to the reception as there doesn't seem to be anyone at the reception at all times. After 10pm it's unmanned and you have to call for a night porter. To enter the hotel after 11pm there is a secure key card entrance, so don't forget your room key card or you must call for the night porter. I didn't have breakfast included, it's served in the restaurant adjoining the hotel, but there are plenty of options on Guildford High Street. Coffee Culture is just around the back of the hotel in Angel Gate courtyard, my room windows looked onto it. This hotel happens to be one of the oldest inns I've ever known about, it dates back to the 1300s and has so much interesting history and a lot of famous guests have stayed here over the years. I didn't see any ghosts and it was so quiet once the bar closed, I had a really comfortable sleep. For parking, just be aware that it's only free parking on the High Street after 6pm untill 9am the next morning, The Castle Car Park a short walk away near Tunsgate shopping centre is the nearest to park that isn't restricted. I felt disappointed that they no longer serve drinks in the lounge where the fireplace is, but the book cases are still there, it's still a good place to relax for a quiet read. I stayed here to attend a late night event that was walking distance from the hotel and it couldn't have been more convenient. It's close to Guildford station and right in the centre, I highly recommended The Angel and I'll definitely stay here again.
