“Great place to stay in the Lake's District.”

We were booked here by our tour group "Active England" for a self guided walking tour of the lake district. We stayed 5 days and 6 nights at the Crow Park, using Keswick as our hub for the tours. The region has a lot of steep hiking trails and unfortunately for us, our tour group had suggested most of them and well, my knees aren't up to that. However prior to the trip I had bought a map of the area, "Lake District BMC (British Mountain Club)" Which had all of the local trails. I also have a compass and know how to read paper maps which is very helpful in this are as cell phone service is spotty out on the trail. The staff at the Crow helped us find several good walks and suggested several towns to go visit (The bus is inexpensive, and the station is right down around the corner at the grocery store, so an easy alternative to driving.). When we were there, you could buy this map in only the Grasmere outdoor store. Everyone else sold the "Lake District OS Explorer map OL4 The English Lakes - North Western area: Keswick, Cockermouth & Wigton" and the OL5. Those maps are more detailed, but much larger and more cumbersome to use on the trail. On the hikes: Everything was very well signed. We brought gaiters thinking we'd need them to keep tick off, but all the trails we walked on were graveled, or well cut back via other hikers so no need. Walking poles are highly recommended. We didn't have ours along, and didn't want to buy a second set so we generally kept to the valley trails. They weren't essential for those as the walking is rolling hills at worse, and flat along most of it. The compass was helpful, but not essential as the trails as I mentioned are well signed. On the room, nice firm mattress, a window that opens to the fresh air and generally a great place to sleep. On the included breakfast. It was good, but my partner is gutten sensitive, so we opted to walk into town and eat there after the first meal, as there were more options available. On getting here, we took the train from London to Penrith, and then a cab to the hotel. We took the bus back to Penrith and saved ourselves quite a bit of money. Originally had planned to take a cab but in the early morning the cabs are busy moving school kids about and weren't available. In hindsight we could have easily taken the bus both ways. Driving on the roads in the Lake District is not for the faint of heart. Narrow, and I mean one lane narrow for a two directional traffic including buses. Our bus driver had to get out and lecture some tourists on how to back up and let us by a couple of times. Don't be that person, ride public transit. This hotel while not on the main street of Keswick, it's a short walk there and not a problem for most of us. It's also pretty close to the Ferry that runs around the lake. We took two hikes which involved a ride on the ferry to the trail head. Easy peasy. There is a farmer's market in Keswick is on Thursday and Saturday. A couple of the stalls took cash only. That was the only time that we didn't need a bank card of some sort. Small but fun. If I go back, I'd gladly stay here again.

Booked via booking.com as a last minute decision to visit Keswick. Never stayed this side of the village before, but know the area. Room we had was on the front with fantastic views of Cats Bells and surrounding countryside. Room was large and comfortable, with a spacious bathroom. Walk in shower was a treat, as decent power. Book direct to avoid the car park charge, but at only £6, currently still good value if parking for all day. We extended our stay as there was availability. We had breakfast the first morning and the service was efficient and smooth, all table service so sit back and relax. We left early the following day, so passed up breakfast for a second time.
