“Excellent Hotel”

Excellent hotel. Well placed for the Abba Arena. Welcoming and friendly staff, clean and comfortable room with an excellent breakfast. Would highly recommend this hotel.

“Charming character hotel, but not the best choice for a work trip”

The hotel is a short walk from the centre of Stratford and almost next door to the DLR station, making it very convenient. The hotel is a short walk from the centre of Stratford and almost next door to the DLR station, making it very convenient. They also offer food discount vouchers for restaurants within a 5–15 minute walk, which is a nice touch and something I would have made use of if I'd been travelling with companions. All the staff were welcoming and friendly. On arrival I was told I'd been upgraded to a suite, which was a lovely surprise. The room itself was full of character, as you'd expect from a listed building. It was spacious, beautifully furnished with elegant furniture, had a large comfortable bed, touch-sensitive bedside lamps, and a carpet that looked more like one you'd have at home than the usual hard-wearing corporate hotel carpet. Everything was spotlessly clean. The fluffy white towels were excellent, and the Rituals toiletries in tamper-proof bottles were a lovely touch. Unfortunately, opening the bathroom door was a bit of a shock. It was the tiniest bathroom I've ever seen – literally like a cupboard. Sitting on the toilet, my knees were under the washbasin, and it was so small I couldn't even fit the kettle under the tap to fill it, so I had to use one of the complimentary bottles of water to make a coffee. The other downside was the sleep quality. One of the ceiling spotlights above the door stayed on all night, and every few minutes the room shook as trains or lorries passed by. I appreciate the hotel is working within the constraints of a historic building, but these issues definitely affected my night's sleep. I later discovered there's a newer annex at the back of the hotel, which made me wonder whether I'd really been upgraded at all. As a small woman, I couldn't help wondering if I'd simply been allocated one of the more challenging rooms because I'd fit comfortably into the tiny bathroom. I may be wrong, but it did leave me feeling a little misled. If I'd been staying for leisure, I'd have loved the character and quirky charm of the building. However, on a work trip, a good night's sleep and practical comforts are more important. I would recommend the hotel if you enjoy historic properties with plenty of character, and the breakfast was good, but if I returned for work I'd ask for a room in the newer part of the hotel.
