We ended up in Ashcroft for what we thought would be a short while, as we were waiting for our mortgage to be approved so we could buy a flat. In the end, we spent a year and a half there. The complex is very well located. It’s close to large shops, Salford Hospital and parks. Although it’s situated not far from the main road, it’s very quiet. The building is soundproofed, so you can’t hear the neighbours in the adjoining rooms. The appliances in the rooms are new, and the fridge in our room ran very quietly. In addition, the centre has a large, modern communal kitchen. On the upper floors, on both sides of the building, there are washing machines which can be used free of charge. However, it is really the people who work there who create the atmosphere of this place. Colin, the manager, has a big heart and excellent manners; he can solve absolutely any problem and find a way out of any difficult situation. Without him, this place would cease to exist and fall into oblivion. The lady who cleans the rooms and kitchens, scrubbing the dirty pots and burnt-on grill grates left behind by unruly guests, deserves a gold medal for her work. What’s more, the main owner, Matthew, is also a down-to-earth sort who’s always on hand to offer advice and help whenever you need it. I’m surprised by the negative comments about this place. I think some guests are just plain grumblers who’d be dissatisfied with everything anywhere else too, because they get a kick out of it. I’m not saying it was perfect – in the middle of the night, I was woken by the fire alarm because some idiotic guests had started smoking in their room. Situations like that are rare there, though. During our 18-month stay, there were good times and bad, but believe it or not, when we finally bought a new flat, we were sorry to move out of there. I think I can honestly recommend this place for short weekend breaks as well as longer stays. Thanks, Colin, you’re brilliant!!!
