“Great hospitality”

This is the second time I’ve stayed at the hotel and it did not disappoint. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. The rooms are lovely and the beds are so comfy! This is the second time I’ve stayed at the hotel and it did not disappoint. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. The rooms are lovely and the beds are so comfy! My friends and I enjoyed some great food and drinks in the on site restaurant- it’s got a great vibe. My favourite part is the pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and plunge pool. So relaxing! Will definitely stay here again.

“Fine overall but a few annoyances”

The Village Hotel near Nottingham is situated close to a small retail park and also just a short walk away from a delightful nature reserve with river walks. Like most Village hotels, there is a gym and swimming pool on site and access seems to be included with most bookings. We stayed on a warm Friday and Saturday night. In the important respects everything was fine. The room was clean and comfortable, the staff friendly, and both the gym and the closeness of the nature reserve are strong points. We did not dine in the hotel at all; the food and bar looked OK but ordinary and somewhat expensive to us and there are plenty of other options nearby. There were a few little annoyances. First I made the mistake of upgrading to a "club room" - it wasn't a big mistake as the price premium was relatively small, but I felt slightly conned as the benefits advertised included gym and pool access, free parking, and free wifi, all of which turn out to be included anyway; also the wifi never worked properly for us, no big deal as the mobile signal is strong. The one meaningful benefit of the club room for us was the pod coffee machine in the room, but it wasn't worth the extra cost. Second, we were there for two nights but the room was not serviced at all, so when we got back on the evening of the second day there was still all our rubbish in the bin, dirty coffee cups, and the two free cans of water were not replenished. On enquiring about the the water (bear in mind this is in the midst of a heat wave) it was explained that they are only provided on the first day of the visit but the staff kindly provided us with two more cans, for which we were most grateful. Third, note that the bedrooms are not air conditioned though the lobby area is. Normally not a problem in England but it was rather warm for our stay; and the duvet on the bed was too heavyweight for the temperature, perhaps we could have got this changed but we did not ask. I know these are relatively small matters, we enjoyed our stay and appreciated the good things about the hotel.

Some chains get it right - those which don’t pretend to be anything but a place to rest your head. Village hotels try to make the stay in their sweaty pits more of an event. I suppose you could call it an event in the same way that the St Valentine's Day massacre was an event. Now I may be being unfair. My stay at the Village Hotel in Chilwell coincided with a suffocating heatwave as well as the ratcheting excitement of the FIFA World Cup. Situated handily in the midst of a retail park, if you like that sort of thing, the Village is another plastic neo-vernacular Dutch barn befitting its location, looking for all the world like another shopping precinct. Check-in can be done without the aid of human intervention and afforded me an advance glimpse at the bar - which I could hear long before I could see. Imagine, if you will, the sort of chaos you might find at a major International airport when a nuclear strike has just been announced, then throw in four gigantic TV screens streaming live sports coverage at full volume. That about covers the general vibe. But my room is where things got hot and steamy, though not in a good way. Opening the door was akin to stepping off a plane somewhere close to the equator. It was like a sauna. No air conditioning to be found, save for the asthmatic efforts of a small desk fan, whirring away ineffectually - not so much cooling as redistributing hot air. I was immediately drenched in sweat and swear I could hear the chirrup of tree frogs and the plaintive strains of an Andalusi band (although I suspect this was just the product of my heat-exhausted mind). But the whole ambience was exacerbated by the fact that I was hermetically sealed in - the windows apparently not able to open. The room was decently appointed with pretty much everything you might need for a night or two: wardrobe (or, rather, clothing niche), comfortable bed, desk, decent coffee, a remarkably edible cookie. In addition to instant coffee, there was also a Nespresso pod machine which is a massive plus for me. The bathroom had, at least, somewhere for all my toiletries to land and one of those curious double showers, just in case you want to toggle between being rained on from a giant square colander or squirted at by a conventional shower head - who doesn’t want to do that? Looking at the menu was a depressingly inevitable experience, finding nothing vegan save for either red wine or white wine (??). It seems a shame to still find a hotel chain in denial about plant-based eating. But let me caveat that by saying it all looked to be good grub and my colleagues certainly appeared to enjoy it. What Village Hotels appear to be trying to do is bridge the gap between soulless sleep pod and holiday destination. I would contest it’s a gap that doesn’t need filling, but at the very least, what you end up with at Village is a poorer version of both. The staff were great, though, and managed to maintain at least a convincing veneer of service with a smile. On balance, however, I’d rather be in a soulless sleep pod.
