1st stay at ibis & as me and Mrs from wolverhampton came down to paignton for Easter weekend & had nice time and stay was nice

We opted to pay a little extra for a sea facing room, and it was well worth it! Waking up to a view of the pier, sea and vista each morning was bliss! Room was lovely, very comfortable bed and pillows. Great use of space to include a storage unit with all amenities you need. Perfect wet room, strong shower that was always warm. Really liked the complimentary shower gel. Only criticism of the room was the air con, which simply did not work. The downside of the windowed sea facing wall is that it becomes a magnifying glass for the sun - making the room very hot, and it wasn’t even summer! Breakfast was excellent, in off season this hotel doesn’t do its own breakfast so instead you go next door to the higher graded Mercure. Some might see this as a negative but we thought this was clever sustainability as they would save a great deal of food waste and carbon from cooking for a small number of guests. Zero complaints about the breakfast next door, big selection and all well cooked. It felt on point for the price point paid. This wasn’t taken into account for the rating but only disappoint was dog owners, as dog lovers ourselves we are pro hotels that allow dogs but here we had a dog in the room next to us that barked continuously each morning from about 7:45 and the owners seemingly didn’t do anything about it. And dogs were allowed into the restaurant for breakfast which didn’t sit right with us - if there was a dog section that wouldn’t be as bad. Most of the team members we engaged with were nice and courteous.

I had a choice between here at £48 or the next door neighbour Mercure at £61. Both seemed to have identical rooms but decorated differently, I opted for the Ibis. On arrival, I really liked the decor in the public space, unfortunately though there was no food being served, either for dinner or the booked breakfast. The room itself was a decent size and whilst I was on the side of the building, it was close enough to the front to have a sea view. The furnishings looked good but felt a little cheap, the hospitality tray certainly basic but this is a budget hotel. The bed was enormous and very comfortable; only two pillows on the king size bed but there might have been more in the wardrobe (certainly there was a duvet not put away folded but rather shoved in there). There was a comfortable armchair/desk chair. The bathroom was compact with a small sink, but well designed. The shower was good, powerful and immediately hot, although I noticed a lot of water damage on the ceiling and you could rock the shower head in the ceiling. Slept well, it was well insulated despite the pouring rain and strong wind. I did go to the bar, but it was only five beers on draft and no cider - this is the West Country so I was surprised - so decided to forgo buying a drink. Breakfast the next morning was with a voucher at the next door Mercure. The decor there was certainly more sumptuous but less “trendy”. A very warm welcome on arrival, the breakfast buffet was perhaps average in choice and nothing like the Hotel Indigo up the road, but the waffle maker and a decent rotary toaster made up for that. Overall, a reasonable budget hotel. I do wonder if I should have picked the Mercure but I’ll probably go back. I’ve scored it 4 by being generous as I’m more erring to 3.5 - if you’re considering Premier Inn in Torquay then I’d advise Ibis Styles instead. If you’re considering the Hotel Indigo further up the bay, then Mercure is perhaps comparable and much better located, but I’d probably pick the Hotel Indigo.
