I also stayed in the New Continental Hotel last year and on both visits I have been really pleased that I chose to do so. I have met with the Reception, restaurant, cleaning and nights shift staff and found them all to be welcoming, helpful and friendly. The 2 rooms I have stayed in were both bright, airy, clean and comfy. I had plenty of space too. For breakfast I would always have a full English and each one was tasty and freshly cooked to order. Also available were toast, ‘help yourself' cereals, fresh made (real not tinned) fruit salad, yoghurts, Danish etc etc. The hotel is in a perfect walking distance for the things I want to do - town centre, Theatre Royal, The Box, Drake Circus, Plymouth Ho! The Barbican and swimming off the terraces adjacent to the Tinside Lido. I think the hotel is really good value for money and the next time I go to Plymouth I will definitely be staying there again.

I have just stayed at the New Continental for work for 3 days. First impressions, the hotel looks quite grand from the outside, on a busy road junction. Check in was efficient, but not overly friendly. The majority of the staff I interacted with during my staff were quiet…. Abruptly / unfriendly / unhappy…. More on that later. Now to the room…. Everything was very dated, but it worked. Bed was reasonably comfortable, bathroom was clean and had a good shower. My view was of a grey wall, but it is what it is, not much the hotel can do about it. I had my dinner paid for by my company, which I was glad about. I wouldn’t have spent my own money on the food there. The restaurant was pretty dead and soulless, again, the staff were quite cold and abrupt and the food was not great on all 3 nights. The hotel was probably one of the noisiest I’ve ever stayed in. Everything creaked, you could hear the slightest movement of anyone else near you. It might been because I was on floor 1, with many rooms above me. Breakfast was good every morning, plenty of choice. This is where I met the nicest staff member during my stay (Peggy) Super friendly and smiley! Cleaning…. This was utterly hopeless. I don’t make a lot of mess, but no one bothered to service the room in the time I was there. I placed the card on my door 2 days running…. Nothing. All I wanted was a dry towel (towel rail didn’t work), and my bin emptying. I had to pop down to reception after waiting until 1900hrs with no sign of any cleaning staff, to ask for a clean towel. So all in all, not a great experience. The hotel did the job, but I’m glad I wasn’t paying for it. I wouldn’t choose to stay here again, there are better options around. This was a shame as the hotel was probably a great place in the past.
