Spent 3 nights at The Lakes Hotel and Spa in Bownes to celebrate my Wife's birthday and was not disappointed. Everything about the place was first class and well deserving of it's 5 stars. We were in Superior Double Room and a fridge would have been nice but other than that, perfect. Staff were excellent, friendly and very professional, always smiling. It would be unfair to single any one member as all were top drawer. Food was exceptional and I'm now 17 stone heavier but it was worth it. Yes it was a little pricey but you really do get what you pay for. Thank you Lakes Hotel and Spa for a fantastic stay. We may be back ??,!!!

The hotel itself is amazing I would definitely rate it 5 star. Greeted personally by a man on the gate who knew my name and welcomed us in. A glass of Prosecco on arrival was a lovely touch and shown round the hotel by concierge was just a lovely experience. The room was a basic double but was a decent size with lovely furnishings, a huge bathroom with corner bath and a lovely view of the lake. Cocktails on the terrace outside the cocktail bar were simply stunning especially on a lovely sunny day. Breakfast in the morning was ten out of ten. Lots of choice for full english, pastries, cheeses, salmon, porridge, you could also order omlettes. Bath robes and slippers are also complimentary and there is a safe in the room. The downside for me is the extra bit not attached to the hotel which is the pub and spa. You really wouldn't want to sit in the pub as the bar area was the reception for the spa which was constantly busy. I booked this hotel to enjoy the spa facilities as it was our anniversary however it was more like a place for people to drink and leave a mess everywhere. It was sooo dark and you could access the bar for a drink which was a nice touch however there were empty plastic cups littering the place and I mean they were everywhere it looked awful. There were no staff there to tidy and clean. People were using the chairs and beds to store their bags and towels meaning you couldn't sit anywhere. The steam room and sauna were tiny holding a maximum of 3 people. The place just felt nothing like the 5 star experience we had in the hotel. To top it off the guy on the bar was incredibly rude. My husband asked for a brandy with ice to which he rudely replied ''we don't do shots'' like we were some teenagers getting pissed! We are nearly 60 and like a brandy! It's not like we were going to be sitting doing jagerbombs or whatever they are called! So overall a gorgeous hotel definately a five star experience but unfortunately the spa / pub does let it down.
